Not saying I would actively consume those on the left side regularly, but I am still confused as to why it became OK to eat some animals, but not others. Is it because we deem them 'cute?' or pets? Its kind of akin to swatting/killing a fly, but saving a butterfly... they are both winged insects, so why all the concern for one, but not the other?

Simple answer is that society deemed it ok. One asshole said this is ok but not these and everyone just went along with it.

Butterflies don't lay eggs and shit in my picnic. Conversely, cattle won't kill mice or guard my house. :notsure:

Plus, if I raise a pig for 6 months I get 150-175lbs of meat. A cow for a year yields over 400lbs. If I raise a chicken for 12 weeks I get a bird that weighs 6-12lbs dressed out. If I raise a cat for 6 months I'd get maybe 2lbs of meat out of the equation. A dog? Maybe 20lbs.

Just looking at it from a practicality standpoint, societal issues aside. :notsure:

Don't get me wrong; cattle have personalities. Pigs are smart, likeable animals. Sending them to slaughter is difficult sometimes. But from an investment/yield standpoint, it makes sense that we eat the ones we do.

ok. I can see that. But what about rabbits? Not much weight there. Its ok to raise them for meat, but gawd forbid you make a coat out of them... And then theres squirrels. Lots of people hunt and eat them. And I KNOW they weigh less than a cat!

    Fair points.

Rabbits breed like crazy and you can feed them on grass and veggie scraps and they'll still gain weight. So if you buy a breeding buck and doe you can get a LOT of meat inside of a year or two from their offspring. Plus fertilizer, plus their skins/fur are awesome insulators for hats, gloves, etc. Not sure who'd say that a coat wasn't ok (other than PETA, but they're nuts anyway)

Squirrels are different because they're a wild animal. Zero investment involved with 'raising' them vs a farm animal, practically speaking. Of course, hunting gear is expensive, so it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

That's really the only way to find out which one you'd like as they are all edible.

Yep. It's more to do with social standards (mores) or sometimes religious views such as cows/Hinduism pork/Islam.

I don't really ever choose goat or lamb simply largely because I never had them growing up and they're not so much imprinted as "food" in my psyche. Elsewhere they're a primary food animal.

Sort of like those cultures who eat insects. Or Cuy in Brazil.

As our bus driver in Grand Cayman said... "The blue iguana, it is protected. The green iguana, it tastes like chicken!"

Some rabbits are domestic. Theres still wild rabbit... So somewhere along the line someone decided to try and tame a few. Here we are today. So why not try to 'domesticate' squirrels? Or better yet, WHY has it not been done?

Yea, the PETA thing. nutbags for sure.

I love goat and lamb. We also grew up eating lots of different game. Bear, duck, goose (watch out for the bird shot!), squirrel, rabbit, venison, pheasant. Im sure I've left out a few. All tasty to me! So Im open to trying others that may not be so socially acceptable. I hear horse is quite good.

So, since I just said it, rabbits are still a wild creature in nature. Where do wild chickens roam? Not the ones in Hawaii that were domestic and released/took off on their own. Nor the ones in Key West. I think I would like to go see a chicken in the wild.
