What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I tried. They’re much longer. I can compress it all the way but can’t get it past the brake cable.... I’m putting in the Billy’s that came off my last truck with lift...I checked wheelers and it says they’re fine to run stock height.

 

Yakima racks will give you plenty of support. They clip on the strongest part of the roof. I used to race bikes... we used to run 6-8 bikes with 12-16 extra wheels on the roof of a Chrysler LeBaron.

The crossmembers will go across to the clips and the basket will go on that.

Attach the top mount and hand tighten th bolt. Then push up on the shock while laying down to compress it. Or use a jack

 

My stock skids are being held on by 50% of the bolts and a few zip ties for at least 10 years now.

 

Anyone have any tips on separating the bellhousing from the block?

 

I'm going to cheat a bit on the "today" part of this thread. Tomorrow and the day after, I have an appointment at Just Differentials.

Gotcha, I'll probably weld some new mounts and nuts on at work this week...maybe 1/4"?

 

It can especially suck the first time if the pins are stubborn. I put a ratchet strap around the Tcase to one of the rear xmembers to put some constant rearward force on the trans. Then find the dowel pin locations and start trying to separate it there. There's a pin just below the starter and one on the opposite side (somewhere around halfway up). It's definitely not the suggested way but inevitably I end up using a screw driver or pry bar to start getting them loose. Just don't over pry cause the input shaft/pilot bearing will be taking the brunt of it. I just end up doing a lot of wiggling and pulling to try and avoid damage. Also, antiseize the pins when you put it back together.

 

My next rig attempt sounds similar to that. I was thinking of running the winch down under to a snatch block and pulling lol.

If it has never been done, then it is a pain. I had to support it with a jack really evenly so there was no binding, and then use a ratchet strap around the tranny body and to a crossmember and ratchet the tranny back while shaking it until it let go and was fully supported by my tranny jack.

Finally pulled the trigger on Level 8s.

 

I tried that. I couldn’t get the shock compressed enough and get it between the axel and brake line st the same time. But I got it done with some square tube and blocks. A bit sketchy but it was much easier to work under there.

Got my truck back from having the Total Chaos shock relocation kit installed. Took it for a quick test drive this afternoon as well.
