Already did that. My ARB doesn't always seal up so I'm sending that in to be fixed under warranty.

I wouldn't be able to get over the mountains without it. With the truck being 40psi low on compression and the effect altitude has it really struggles.

Got the diff out and visually everything looks fine. Hoping to put some air to it tomorrow and see if I can figure out where it's leaking. It probably won't since it's an intermittent problem.

One thing I didn't think to check was the pressure my compressor was putting out. I doubt that is the problem but is something I should check.

Started the process of dropping the transmission. To those of you who work on vehicles for a living kudos to you!

I have everything unbolted but the bellhousing is still stuck to the motor. I'm guessing the dowel pins don't want to let go.

Since I don't want to do this again I think I really need to decide what I'm gonna do for the heart of this thing. I'm pretty confident that I could pull off a TDI swap but I worry how reliable it would be. I've heard of the drive by wire failing after getting wet which would not be good. I haven't actually read of anyone's timing belt jumping time because it gets wet but everyone (om617 fanboys) seems to say that it's a problem. Also I'm guessing about a +$3500 price tag. Here's a short list of the bigger items needed. Most of the numbers are somewhat of a generous guess.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...XKD6juki4N49bCOvZUYStn3GKTc/edit?usp=drivesdk

I wanted the BHW motor for a few reasons. Makes the most power stock and it's already mounted longitudinal in the 04-05 Passat making frame rail clearances easier. There are two big negatives to this motor though with the balance shaft and camshaft. You can read more about it here along with other general TDI information. http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showthread.php?42666-VW-TDI-Swap-info-guide#/topics/42666

So with all that said I'm about 99% sure that I'm going to rebuild my 3rz with the intent to add a mild forced induction setup later on. Financially it makes the most sense right now, I have a lot of other expensive hobbies and having a solid truck that doesn't always need tinkering on will be nice. I don't trust my wrx to be the reliable vehicle I'd like it to be. I would however like to get a TDI because 35-40 mpg would be awesome! And diesel is a good bit cheaper than premium.

Maybe once the housing market crashes and I buy my own place where I can let something sit for extended periods I'll look back into the swap.

All of my motor swap knowledge is of older mechanical stuff. How would you go about making your gauges all still work or is that not a concern of yours?

I never read to much into that. I figured I'd look into once I got to that point. I already pretty much rely on my obdlink to tablet for accurate speed. I'm sure I could do the same with the tdi ecu to Obd.

I think everything can be wired in fairly easily though with the exception of the tach from what I've read.

Nothing like jacking a tranny while a creeper helps you get the right angle for the best grip...

Woot! Finally got this off! Reposition the winch to pull from the top and gave it a shake and bake that would make Ricky Bobby proud and it popped off!

I'm kind of surprised how little dirt is inside. I never knew how well ventilated the bellhousing was.

lol great minds think alike. I had a big ratchet strap around a crossmember attatched to the t-case and shook that thing like it owed me money lol. I am hoping it goes on a lot smoother. I'm thinking of making a plywood jig to bolt on to my trans jack to hold it in place better. I'm also thinking of adding a little grease or anti-seize to the dowel pins to make them slide right in :fingerscrossed:

    What clutch did you get?

My dowels looked pretty clean and I didn't notice any corrosion on them. But I will be coating them in grease to hopefully prevent it from sticking again. Now that I know what I'm doing I don't think it would be as bad to do it again though.

I ordered the Marlin crawler kit with the 1200 lb pressure plate. I have no complaints with OEM though and I may go back to it if I don't like the heavier pressure.

I'm anxious to see what my clutch disk and flywheel looks like after 230k
