Truck sat for almost 2 weeks because i was waiting for OEM valve cover gaskets to come in. Couldnt go into gear even with cluch pressed in. Clutch reservoir full. So i put the truck in reverse, pressed the clutch, turned the key. The truck jerked back so i turned off ignition. Put truck back in neutral, started truck, now all gears Not sure if this tapping came with the truck or if I was the cause. Truck has power. Goes up hills quick. Haven't gone to a mechanic yet.

Edit* tapping is there even when clutch is pressed in. Also noticeable when warmed up. Cold start tapping isn't there. Noise is louder underneath truck

    Tapping sounds like valves.

As per not going into gear, I would suspect that a different issue, especially related to the clutch. When you push the clutch, does the clutch fork move?

And this noise wasn't there at all before you changed the valve cover gaskets?

Not trying to sound like an ass.....just standard procedure asking....are all tools accounted for afterward? Sockets, scrapers?

    EDIT: Yes, personal experience.

I would guess it moves now. It goes into all gears normally.

Honestly not sure. When i picked up the truck i guess i was too excited to even listen to the motor. Plus i turned up the bass that came with the truck driving it home. So when I picked it up, i let it sit in the garage till the gaskets came in. All tools are accounted for. I'll be pulling out the valve covers again to see

Was thinking maybe an exhaust leak. But kind of a higher pitched tap you got going on. Maybe valves? But then if it's louder underneath... I dunno.
Is the check engine light on by chance? If so do you know what codes it's throwing?

Try removing the oil fill cap while it's running and see if the ticking gets louder..should let you know if it is an internal engine problem at the very least.

Interesting. Never heard that before. Will oil be squirting out if I do this?

It would explain both problems. The sound and gearbox. I wouldn't pull valve covers just yet unless you really think something went wrong.

I only mentioned it because it was the last thing done. Didn't realize it was the only thing you knew about the truck (being new to you).
