    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at buying a 2013 double cab short box manual transmission. It has approximately 70,000km (43,500 miles) on it. It has been registered in Quebec, Canada, and now Manitoba.
I have heard some disconcerting things about frame rust and was wondering where I should be looking when I crawl under this truck. I did take a few pictures of some patches that I wanted to get second opinions on.

Could you please provide me with some advice of spots to look at and if you think the rust in the pictures is something to be concerned about?

    Thanks!

    Price of truck?

You have some areas that need attention if you buy it, I'm surprised at how bad the exhaust system is for that mileage and age. Looks like it was gravel roaded a lot and depending on if they were treated, those can really age a vehicle. [calcium chloride]

They want just under $30,000 Canadian. I believe Quebec still uses a fair amount of salt on their roads.

Walk away. Go buy an ecoboost Ford f150 with that money.

I'd rather push a broken Toyota than drive that crappy "weakoboost"

Thanks for the answers so far! Anywhere else I should look on the underside? Or is the consensus to walk away from this one and keep looking?

The 30,000 is a competitive market price for this vehicle. That's without any bargaining.

Have the local Toyota dealer perform a pre-purchase inspection on it, and specify you want the frame carefully checked for rust.

Use it as a bargaining chip to lower the price, assuming they don't offer to replace or coat the frame for the seller right then & there.

Don’t do it. Rusted frames are dangerous.

Unless you can get a much lower price and then go change the frame, walk away

Well some of that rust might be covered in the TSB https://www.torquenews.com/1083/toyota-tacoma-catalytic-converter-rattle-warranty-extension
but you aren't going to find a rustless tacoma up there...
But you're looking at $23K USD for that truck and that is the Trade in value for a good condition 2013 manual 4 door 5ft 4wd (assuming 4wd) around here so I wouldn't say you're getting ripped off..

Check the brakes (probably toast if they are original) The frame rust might be eligible for the free rust inhibitor from toyota, the catalytic converter might be eligible for a free replacement due to that "noise you hear"

Check the tire tread...winter is coming and it's $1K for a set and if it's the stock tires they only have about 40K if driven gingerly...

Obviously check for carfax clean record...

Rust is going to happen on a toyota...
I have a 2010 w/ 131K miles...It's got rust...everything I try to do I have to beat the rust...These are pictures from BEFORE the rust treatment and my truck was fine...the frame was not compromised...so from looking at yours it doesn't look too bad :)

Have you driven the latest ecoboost... holly shit balls talk about power and a nice truck if i needed full size id be in one.

But to the OP, no way id buy that truck being only 4 yrs old.... but we dont see much rust on vehicles down here in socal so maybe my opinion is skewed.

My 2013 in Vermont has been undercoated since new. Our state uses brine & salt very liberally. I also visit Quebec a lot during Winter to snowmobile. I snapped a couple of pics for comparison. Same year truck & conditions. 80k on my truck.

People never pay attention to Canadian monies.

That price is fair for a used 2013.

I have a 2013 and my frame isnt that bad but the welded portions are starting to rust.
I honestly think frame rust probably can’t be avoided with these trucks. (Which is why people with them probably shouldn’t throw stones at Fords... just sayin).

I wouldn't be terribly concerned about the rust in the original post. My 2012 looks similar. I would def use it as a bargaining chip though.
