Whats your vote and why? I could get 4.88’s and save for install or the OV tune i preordered. Currently running SSP v2 and very happy with it. Truck just slow off line and no get up if i need to slide into an open lane quick.

Don't most people run stock gears with 33's without issue?

Yes but in the 4.88 mega thread people love the regears with 33’s. Truck is noticibly slower than stock off line and around 3/4th gear. Also heard regear greatly improves mpg. But then again the tune has almost 100% satisfaction too. Too many options!!!!

How much are the gears? What type? I need to invest in some myself.
But since you asked, I'd lean towards gears. Seems like OV's still working out some of the final kinks. The learn mode and adaptability make me hesitate for a tune at this point.

Is do gears. Especially if you plan to continue to mod your truck. Once you add weight the gears will help a lot. The ov tune helps with the shift mapping. Gearing will help hold a lower gear at higher speeds and it’ll give you a little more off the start.
I have a lot of weight, and I’ll be going to 4.88s soon. Was considering the ov tune, but that doesn’t do too much for a truck with weight and bigger tires.

Gears are 900 for under 10k on truck kit plus about 1200 install for 2200-2500 otd price. Thats for 4.88 nitros. Havnt read one thread of someone wanting to go back to stock. Even though OV is working out tune the customers still get the free updates so that isnt an issue for me. I just cant decide lol. But appreciate everyones input.

I’d try the tune first. 2200.00 is a lot of money you’ll never get back.

I’d go gears. With that weight plus a trailer, gears will help a lot.
For reference. My truck has steel bumper, sliders, skids, topper, RTT and a bed storage system, I can’t hold 5th gear at 70 mph. It stays in 4th at 3,000+rpms. Not good for gas or the engine. Gears will help hold 5th at these speeds.
You might be in the same boat once you start pulling a trailer.

I installed a sspv2 and now get 5th at 53mph love it! I couldnt hit it tell 74mph before. Thats why im leaning towards gears and the ssp.

I vote for gears. From what I've read everyone seems happy after they did it and the top gears become usable again and much better pick up off the line. I will be adding 4.88 gears in mine but I will be running 35" tires so it's an easy choice. Still undecided about adding a front locker for the hell of it while I do the regear.

My truck is for camping/daily driver so front locker will be overkill for me. And yes everyone seems very happy with it and the tune seems to be relearning for now and people are starting to notice but hes fixing all that. If i go gears ill buy them now then have to wait several months until i can afford the install.

You can order complete assemblies from ECGS. It’ll cost more up front, but you send back your cores and get a lot of money back. Then it will be a little cheaper for install. That’s my plan when I do it.

I went gears. 1460$ otd REM polished. Now to line up an installer in SoCal while i’m waiting for them to arrive. I know I will be very happy with this decision.

This is really a no brainer. OVtune does absolutely nothing to fix the issue you mention (performance loss due to tire size), only a re-gear will fix that.
