4WD hi questions and basic info

Those assholes might feel you are being lazy and cluttering up the forums with a useless post because the info is in the manual....


Just playing devils advocate here, I got no skin in the game.

 

you got that answer because its true. There's like 20 pages on it that can give you toyotas exact recommendations on 4x4.

But to sum it up since you're too lazy to go check it from the sounds of it. This thread has been made numerous times. So it gets annoying each time someone new to 4x4 post it.

-Use it on roads where wheel slip is possible as you have no centre diff so front and rear wheels will travel at same speeds. Which will make turning hard and can damage the drivetrain.
-4hi can be engaged on the fly up to 100km/h (60mph)
-4lo you must be in neutral to engage in automatics and push clutch in for manual.


If you off road often and use 4lo you're fine. don't worry about it.
It shouldn't be used on pavement as you'll get bind. Want to see what I mean go throw it in 4hi and you'll feel how it won't want to move side to side at all. You'll feel a lot more resistance with turning.

Toyota says 10miles a month. I don't do it a month since june july august I'm off road every weekend in 4lo.
winter I'm in 4hi with the snow
other months I try to get off road at least once a month so I still get enough use. Even if I miss a month never off it doesn't matter. They just say 10miles a month for those that never use it. But if you use it often enough for enough milage it will get enough use and stay lubricated.

Using 4lo is probably one of the best things you can do as the actuator between high and low gears will seize if it never gets used

 

There are quite a few of us (myself included) who have never had a 4X4 until now. Even though I read the manual I have always felt there was more "real world" explanations to learn about.

It's great to hear from those who have the expertise to provide suggestions. Reading the manual doesn't give me the confidence to just "go do it", but knowing answers to the questions here gives me more confidence so I don't screw up my ride LOL.

Replying to a useless post because they think it's cluttering up the forum, thereby cluttering it further..... Makes sense to me.

I can easily go back and check all their posts... I'd be super surprised if everything they ever posted was new information, not already on this forum multiple times. Should i go tell them "hey we all know about that size tire, lightbar, lift kit"... It's been on here hundreds of times? NO. Because It's not helpful and wastes time.

Until a mod says "don't post this" i have every right to post questions. They can easily move along if they already know the answers and don't care to help. There are rules, however, to being nice here...

Snow means adjust your speed and drive to conditions.

I say this cause you wouldn't believe the amount of Audis, subarus, and 4x4s you see in the ditch off the highway around here.

@Gettin Lost dont get into it with them. There will always be repeat posts and there will always be people complaining about it. Just ignore both.

Another "tip" for going in and out of 4hi... I always take my foot off the accelerator before I engage/disengage. Wait for the light to go on or off, and then ease into the throttle again. Then the gears won't "bang" or thump. It just feels to me like it's easier on the components when you're not accelerating when engaging or disengaging.

Good tip mentioned above. I've never used 4lo in 20+ years of owning Tacoma's. But I still "excercise" it a couple times a year to keep things lubricated.

 

winter is 4hi on road. any other time I'm in 4lo haha. I probably get more km/year in 4lo than 4hi.
I do the same with the let off accelerator too. If you don't its a bit of a thud and probably not the best for gears.

 

I rarely use 4lo; is there a speed limitation on using it? Not looking to do anything stupid, just a general parameter for its use especially on back roads. The manual doesn’t give much for when you are in 4lo.

 

I thought I read somewhere that you can switch to 4 hi up to 62 MPH. I didn't rtfm, so maybe i'm wrong. I thought it was on the visor somewhere.

 

If you attempt to engage 4HI while going over 62MPH the light will blink and the dash beeps.
