What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Yeah, I read all of that at the time it was happening. My question to Monte was based on something he said on the tour.

 

I don't remember my owners manual telling me how to do any maintenance besides fluid changes. Makes sense that would be in the service manual which is for sale to customers, it's not some secret tome hidden from the masses. We are a small subset of people that do their own maintenance, it isn't typical especially on new vehicles.

 

Owners are just going to drive it however they drive it, right? I mean, it's not like owners who continually break lower ball joints slow down either...they just keep breaking them.

That is for breaking in a new vehicle not breaking in the brake system. Lots of stuff like diff, engine, and transmission being worn in. But okay, I'm not here to convince you either and I do not care if you believe in a commonly accepted convention or not, it's no skin off my teeth and like I said before it isn't worth contesting it takes almost no time to complete.

 

You know what I mean captain obtuse. The whole vehicle as a system, some things will have conflicting procedures and thus will be prioritized. We were talking about breaking in brakes not a whole truck. I'm done, you can contest whoever is left that still wants to discuss it, I'm spinning my wheels.

 

Can anyone suggest any good undercarriage paint? I'm sandblasting and repainting my front differential and thought there's better paint for this purpose than rattle can Rustoleum. I can spray it with a spray gun so anything in a paint can works.

 

Some of the Eastwood products have great reviews and I know you can get them in bulk. Might be a good starting point.

 

Any word on POR15? I've heard good things about it.

 

I've never used it myself so I can't say. Seems like its big selling point is the rust converter aspect, but then I hear people say that it'll chip off without great prep so

 

Took a look at the Eastwood stuff, looks good. Debating on if spending the extra $20 on the quart so I can use my spray gun or just spending the $12 on a rattle can would make any difference.

This is really a very easy search to do. It's not just some dude on the internet, it's a bunch of dude's on the internet and it varies by manufacturer, so follow the manufacturers recommendation.
New cars off the lot are...new, and everything kind of needs to work as most are non believers in anything they haven't experienced first hand. We have to assume that some drivers are very new and won't bother to crack open the manual.

There is a very real thing about looking at a used car for purchase and trying to determine just how the original owner did there own particular vehicle "break in". Some used cars are gems, others are on the edge of disaster because someone thought changing the oil was harmful to the environment.......

I believe that all 01-04s came with the 13/16s and single booster.


My pedal is firm. But I am comparing that directly to the ultra squishy pedal from the T100 Mc and dual booster

That said. I still stand by my theory that the small Mc and booster net better pedal feel and results from the Tundra brake mod.

I mean yes you're probably fine. Lot of work so I wouldn't say you have to. I do believe that to get the most out of it the smaller setup works better.

But really the biggest difference is pedal feel. Even my super squishy setup would stop the truck. But now I can lock them up with ease.

Mine feels better today, but i will bleed my LSPV today. I dont think I ever did that when I changed my rear line out. So maybe I can just feel it more now with the new system? If I can get the pedal a little more stiff I will be happy. The stopping power feels great and is very noticeable.

I recommend POR 15. Base coat and top coat. Great coverage and protection. Super strong stuff. Easy touch ups with a matte black finish. I used it on my front tube bumper.

 

Im running Yakima qtowers on cab. They just clip on with no drilling. Easily removable. Control towers on shell with baskets. I drilled into the cab. Very strong. I recently moved, and l loaded them up with a bunch of stuff. I highly recommend the Yakima roof racks. You can piece a set together for about 50% of original retail price.

 

The first time I installed my Tundra brakes was about 3-4 years ago. It felt "squishy" compared to stock for sure...pedal traveled a bit deeper too. Figured that was just part of the upgrade. After replacing pads/rotors, drums/shoes a few weekends ago my brake pedal feels a lot firmer and the pedal travel has decreased significantly.

I didn't do the work this time around as I currently don't have the time or space for this job. Maybe my friend/mechanic can chime in on his brake fluid bleeding procedure (I just gravity bled them the first time). @Speed Freek

I'm thinking replacing the rear drums and shoes made a difference too. Just because I don't remember it being this firm when I first did the upgrade. So, if bleeding the brakes and getting all of the air out doesn't do it for you, maybe just check to see if the rear drums/shoes need to be replaced?
