Yes. Several. But what do you mean my “sounds like a pulley”? Like, what about the pulley are you guessing has malfunctioned? Bearing?

So you can still hear it at idle, but when you mash the clutch in it goes away? Could be your throwout bearing. Turn the radio up lol

Alternators whine when they're starting to fail. Idler pulley's whine (Serpentine belt) Power steering pumps whine. The clutch changing the whine may be a tip off...maybe not...but that would point towards T.O. bearing.

Maybe the police car behind you (with the lights on) might have been the source of that "whine"....

Barely hear it at idlenid you’re listening for it. Gets outer and louder as rpms increase. Very loud just before shifting around 3k rpm.

Doesn’t seem related to steering at all so we can rule out the pump.

I really don’t think it’s a clutch related issue either. It really sounds like it’s coming from the engine bay. Plus, it only has 69k miles on it. I’m pretty easy on it. I think the reason it stops when I mash the clutch is due to the instant drop in rpms rather than something to do with the TO bearing.

I need to get someone sit in the truck and work the throttle while I try to pinpoint the sound.

Someone called it, but I can’t help bu think it’s related to the several deep water/mud crossings Saturday.

@rngr Turn your AC on and see if that makes a difference. The AC compressor pulley is stupid low on the 3.4 and known to go out. Not sure where it is on the 2.7 though.

4 Tacoma's and a Tundra in my past. The ONLY "part" I've had to fail multiple times was the alternator. The alternator on my tundra sounded just like you described, EXCEPT it was an automatic....So no effect from clutch. The alternator (literally) blew up as I was pulling into the dealership to trade it in on a 2004 Dodge 2500 I had next.

A buddy owns an auto electric shop, so that's where I usually end up going to get replacement's or rebuilds on electrical items. Of the 4 alternators I've replaced, ALL 4 were full of dried mud when we dis-assembled them. Lost a starter to the same malady. I used to be the guy who would drive through the pond while everyone else watched and laughed....Now days I go to considerable length to stay out of standing water. There's a point on the graph where fun and expense cross each other... and trashing expensive components just isn't as much fun as it used to be.

May be on to something there. Had an AC compressor clutch fail on a '92 Ford Ranger...It squalled like a skinned cat as it was going bye bye.

Most domestic brands will power AC compressor when defrosters are on so the compressor will lube during prolonged periods when AC isn't used. Not sure about Toyota...

No. AC does not make a difference in this noise. I do have a little bit of pre-existing AC squeal though. Who cares though? It’s winter. Solid 7 months until I need to worry with that. :)
After some quick YouTube research, it absolutely sounds like alternator whine. Going to stick a long screwdriver on it and listen here in a few.

Yea... I’m over the mud too. But when there’s no way around it, you just gotta hit it. Might as well have fun. Haha.

Check the AC idler pulley. I go through about one a year. I've bought Toyota OEM new units and they last the same amount of time as the chicom rockauto specials so don't waste your money on OEM. The problem is that pulley sits so low and it is constantly douched with mud, salt, sand, water, road grime, zombie corpses (after you hit them of course), Starbucks tossed out the window of the land rover in front of you etc...

You can change the bearing but it's easier and not that much more to just swap the pulley when it goes bad. Keep one in stock in the garage at all times.

Hahaha I am having the exact same issue. I gotta stop being stupid and hitting water so much or at least pay the fucker off first. I have the exact symptoms. After I clean the motor today I fully anticipate having to replace one of the pulleys off of the serpentine belt.

I am this guy. I gotta stop being an idiot. There is a video from this weekend of me putting water over the hood for shits and giggles, no wonder I was the only guy to drive through it.

Mud sucks because shit breaks a month later while on your way to a job interview or something important like that. At least with rockcrawling when it breaks, it breaks right then and there and you have to fix it.

Yeah, most likely in the belt drive. Last time I sunk mine, the alternator, starter, and AC belt pulley went out a few months later. It sounds like yours is doing what mine did with the AC pulley. Easy replacement

Sounds like most of the whining you're experiencing is in the driver's seat. :brianr:

You can work the throttle body to change rpms while you're under the hood.

Yes, but I can’t work the throttle and hold my home made stethoscope (long screwdriver with a gallon jug on the end)

    So far I’ve found...

The power steering tensioner pulley is the loudest by far. Still not convinced that’s the culprit because the AC tensioner pulley has some obvious wobble to it. While it is quieter than the PS, it has an odd sound. The wobble I see has to head the bearing is shit, correct?

So hard to tell where’s the noise is coming from.
