I recently had a URD stage 2 clutch installed in my 05 Tacoma V6 6 speed manual. I was replacing the throwout bearing with the beefed up URD bearing kit and figured while they were in there I might as well put a new clutch in (I'm at 140,000 miles) I figured at first the problem was I wasn't used to the new clutch, but it's been a few weeks and it's pretty annoying. I'm getting pretty heavy chattering and lurching when starting out in 1st and sometimes in second (also in reverse). When I'm downshifting 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st it will shake as well when I release the clutch. This DOES seem to happen more when the car is cold, but it does it somewhat at all operating temps. Is this normal, or is this something some sort of adjustment will cure?

Interesting...I was looking at getting the same clutch. Did you properly break in the clutch per URD's instructions? Most aftermarket performance clutches have a + or - 500 mile break-in period. Did you evenly tighten down the pressure plate/clutch to the flywheel and torque it to spec? Did you have the stock flywheel resurfaced? If all else fails call URD I've had great customer service from them.

As per URD's breakin, there was no specific instructions included with the kit. I"ll check the website. As for torquing the pressure plate, I had this done at a reputable shop in town and I imagine they did things correctly  The stock flywheel was resurfaced yes. I agree about URD customer service and will call them if nobody here has any quick answers. Thanks!

I couldn't find URD's break in procedure but found comparable clutch break I. Procedures. Basically they say to do 200-300 miles of as gentle, stop and go type driving before really opening her up. Luckily for me I live in a small town on an island, so all my driving is gentle stop and go. I have at least 200 miles on this clutch though, and it's still chattering. I'm going to call URD tomorrow and get the low down. I may need to take it back to the shop that did it and talk to the tech and ensure he installed it correctly and have them drop the tranny to make sure they didn't bend a clutch disk.

Make sure the clutch pedal is properly adjusted, and you might try bleeding the clutch.

Well, I talked to Gadget at URD. According to him the clutch should have been butter smooth from day one. To him it sounds like an improper installation and to "just pop it off and send it here so we can test it." Easier said than done. I live in BFE Alaska where the shop rate is astounding and shipping is even crazier. That and I'm supposed to be driving the ALCAN in 3 weeks. The best I can hope for is the shop to own up to this being their fault and pay for URD to send a new clutch out ASAP. This combined with dental issues, girl issues, and everything else is adding up to a very stressful week.

Interested to hear if you figured out the clutch issue? I'm in a similar situation.

I never really figured anything out. The clutch still shakes a bit in first when it's cold etc. The only way to really get a smooth start in first is to really pour the gas on and drop the clutch fast and take off like a race car. I think the problem is more that I got more of a performance clutch than I needed. Hopefully it'll smooth out with more time.

Did this ever get better? I’m actually going through pretty much the exact same thing with my 08 after having the same clutch installed. It shakes pretty bad when letting out the clutch in 1st and reverse and also chatters pretty bad in 1st through 4th unless I baby it

i have no experience with the URD clutch

i do have a lot with manual clutches

if the clutch face or flywheel surfaces are contaminated by greasy fingerprints or

oil ....fluids similar issues will follow

    chatter.......uneven engagement......slipping

many times replacing the clutch resurfacing isnt necessary unless the flywheel

surface has been damaged...........prev disc worn tooo far

i think part o Ur problem is the thickness & clearance of the flywheel

from 5k miles away....................NO way for me to say

U having someone do the work is not a crime...............just no way

o knowing they have enuf experience with the URD parts

sometimes just eyeballing aftermarket agains OEM makes a difference

true i know the worn clutch wont look like the URD unit

    yet

Same issue hear way back when. Ended up replacing with an oem and shipped the bad URD stage 2. Gadget admitted the clutch itself had failed. Now I am on a Kevlar from Clutch Master with the Hydro bearing, because boost. Much better.

Engagement issues like this often happen when switching away from OE clutch components to "higher performance". And very few Tacomas need more than the factory clutch, but people have to "upgrade" themselves into drivability problems. I did this myself once and learned.

i have the URD stage 2 on my v6 3rd gen. it's been in about 10k miles. we did have a small part issue and required opening her up again to replace the TOB and wave ring spacer a second time (yeah, PITA), but that had nothing to do with the clutch or FW itself.

my experience with the URD stage 2 is totally excellent. i did it as a performance upgrade and am fully satisfied and would do again. it's strong, predictable, and easy to drive pretty much from day 1, but of course it changes feel as the FW and clutch break in, but aside from the spacer/TOB thing it's been no drama, all good with the driving.

Except there are hundreds, if not thousands of Tacomas with forced induction that do need more clamping force and heat management then the factory clutch provides. I think the group buy when I bought my supercharger was over 40 people alone. Sure, some just like to spend money on things they don't need but that's part of being an enthusiast. So the market is justified in offering these upgrades.

Bummer, appreciate the reply though @findingthingsout

I'm very familiar with that thread! I've basically studied it in anticipation for getting one eventually
