Yeah I guess you make a point there. Very hard to get through to the company over the phone or by email. Honestly I would have transmissions sitting on the shelf built ready to ship out. Then if someone wants a "custom" build with upgraded parts then there is a wait. I don't know. I don't build transmission everyday.

Out of curiosity how was the transmission packed/boxed?

They are packaged well in my opinion. They come in a large cardboard box that has a molded type of firm packing that acts like a cradle. Thick pieces of cardboard padding on sides/front/back. Smaller piece of thick cardboard are wedged into keep the transmission from moving around. Transmission was wrapped in cling wrap and then placed in a thick plastic bag.

This will help give you an idea of once opened, cardboard pieces/wedges are remove and out of plastic

This one seemed to get an extra rough treatment by Fedex. You can see the damage near the tip of the input shaft. It actually went all the way through the side of the box itself. Good thing it had the plastic bad tied up at the end to at the protect it. Im sure the treatment it received during deliver is why I had the reverse jamming issue.

I was wondering how they shipped them. I have to send a core transmission back so I got the round trip. Man that thing is clean. I am thinking of painting mine. Kind of got a theme going now. Red JBA uca, red cv axles after rebooting them and boot slide mod. Maybe paint the transmission red as well. Just for the heck of it.

Mine came in a rubbermade container with the top zip tied on and a spray foam type stuff around it and a plywood bottom. This was to be used to return the core as well, pretty nice setup! The people at the FedEx store hated me but whatever.

The first dozen or so shifts are going to be super tight to the point of almost not wanting to go in gear. Can't remember if my jnput turned or not while dry.

Thought I should give an update/conclusion. New Transmission install went fine.

I was a bit worried as the with everything back together the drive shaft was very hard to turn by hand even with the transmission in neutral(wheels off the ground and e-brake off) and transmission and t-case full of lube. Fired the truck up and tried to slowly release the clutch in neutral, but it wanted to stall each time like something was bound up. Could even smell the clutch slipping a bit. Went for reverse and gave a bit of gas and slowly released the clutch and with a BANG whatever was jammed up in the transmission let loose.

Not sure what the binding issue was about, but it drives well now and I have no leaks. Shifts very nicely and no popping out of 5th gear.

Not sure why the transmission was all bound up, but glad it got "unstuck" and hope it doesn't cause any longer term issues. I am thinking FedEx's extra rough treatment of this unit caused it.

Even got to put some miles on the truck and take it duck hunting on Sunday

    Thanks for the help!!

I'd be careful running gl5 spec oil. Most people caution against it. Saying basically it is too slippery.

They do shift much better on a GL-4 like MT90, that is for certain. They assemble these transmissions with lithium based tacky red grease as an assembly lube. I didn't want to "taint" the $20 a quart MT90 with the grease and any metal that might be created during break in.

A short run of GL-5 wont hurt anything. Frankly a long run of GL-5 wouldn't hurt anything. I figure all the Toyota dealerships(most Toyota dealerships put regular Dino Valvoline 75w-90 in anything needing gear oil) and countless auto repair places have been putting GL-5 lube in these and many other manual transmissions for a very long time and never had an issue. The newer Gl-5 gear lubes don't eat brass and bronze like the older stuff used to , from what I understand.

Have put a little over 800 miles on the new transmission. Everything is going well so far. The transmission is tighter/stiffer as you would expect a fresh rebuild to be. I will probably wait another 200 miles or so before changing the fluid out for the Redline MT90.

So far no leaks, bad noises or popping out of gear. Truck performed flawlessly on this weekends hunting trip, so very happy to have it back on the road.

Good to hear. Mine is supposed to ship out today. So hopefully I can get in while I’m off for Christmas and get it put in.

Got my transmission and installed it yesterday. You were right tight and stiff but smooth. The more I drove it the smoother it got. I also have marlins short throw shifter installed.
