Thanks for saving me a trip down to the dealership but I guess I'll hardly ever be using my 4wd! And the fact I need to get out and push my truck to engage 4wd is a pain. Why are we doing shit like that in 2017??

Those gears have to mesh together. If its not lined up and you are sitting there in neutral its never gonna go. It goes in easiest in drive while rolling. Getting it to go in while stopped in neutral is just a roll of the dice on where the splines ended up when you stopped.

    Exactly.

You don’t. Just put in 4HI while driving less than 55mph and driving straight, and it should engage no problem. If you need to do it when you first turn on the truck, switch the selector to 4Hi, then put in D and drive slowly straight forward until it engages.

She's been in Subies for years. But really liked the test drive in the runner. Thanks again.

Here's a decent video probably worth watching for anyone who doesn't feel like they understand from all the comments. Understanding what's happening and how the system works can help clear up what should and shouldn't be done with it.

"Not bumper to bumper traffic". There are stretches of interstate around here where you won't pass a vehicle or be passed for 50 miles. It's flat as a pancake and you can see a car in front of you a mile away.
