Most of what he will runs across will be general purpose stuff like hoses and filters, OEM on those will raise the cost a lot for basically the same thing. Only thing might be changing engine mounts, I'd go with OEM for a daily.

Hmm only ones off the top of my head would be flywheel/flexplate bolts. Wasn't sure if you had a manual or an auto.

And my bad for not multiquoting, but get a long extension for the bell housing bolts. I had a bunch end on end when I removed the bolts and I didn't like how it went down - I knew that getting an actual torque figure for reinstalling would be a nightmare if I didn't do something else. I haven't put the trans back in, but this is what I bought for when the time comes - 3/8 on the male end should be fine to torque the bolts down with.

I have a four seasons brand heater valve, works good, they're quality aftermarket though. I like to get felpro syn rubber gaskets for the valve covers cause theirs always fit haha. OEM gaskets are always super high markup so I stay away. My list of OEM only items is very small, cause our trucks are old enough that the aftermarket (specifically high quality brands like Victor-Reins, 4Seasons, SECO, list goes on) has really found what works and what doesn't. I like OEM for some rubber stuff, engine and tranny internals, pressure regulation stuff, brakes, and electronic components. That's about it though, better value to be found elsewhere for most others.

Any chance for a full list of the good aftermarket folks so I can keep an eye out for those.

Yeah this was my first time through this kind of project with no one to hold my hand so I had to do what I had to do - building my parts engine will be a better build with more time to research and experience by the time it's done.

Oof, that would be a novel. The tricky part is just to be an enthusiast that looks up damn near everything haha. Some brands are good for some things and some are good for others... and some should just be avoided at all costs. I'd be happy to tell you a good part for any specific thing you're looking for though.

No shit that's bolted to the engine block? I thought it was on the frame rails under the driver's door.

Only on v6 trucks, 4cyls have it bolted to the block right under the intake plenum.

You're kidding... what an inconvenient place for a fuel filter.

Go look, I can actually change it without removing anything, but lots of people say you have to remove the intake plenum or the alternator to get to it.

Guess it's time to replace it... been thinking of what could be causing my long lasting P0171 system too lean code. Driving the truck yesterday was one of the weirdest experiences I've had. It was a freezing morning, probably the coldest one this year (a shocking 39° for California) and I didn't let the truck warm up enough since I was late.

That drive was the slowest that truck has ever gone, it shifted so goddamn slow I couldn't go past 40. I don't know what it was, it's like it was stuck in 1st or 2nd gear the whole drive. Next day was the same. I always keep ECT on since the 4cyl is slower than a herd of snails traveling through peanut butter. When I turned ECT off it shifted normally again.

Weird thing was the CEL never came on. Usually that P0171 code comes up every time I accelerate hard. Someone told me the system could be lean due to a clogged fuel filter, who knows.
