Have been doing some research on making the switch from 285/70r17 to a 255/75r17.

Wanted to see if anyone here has done it and see what their impressions were. Im running 285/70r17 Falken Wildpeaks currently (P rated) on my 16' TRD-OR Have no real issues other than weight (only 50lbs. per tire). I'm lifted on full OME suspension with 888 coils.

I see that the wrangler duratracs in 255/75r17 are around 40 lbs which would def probably feel a little bit lighter on the feet. Just using these as an example as they seem to be pretty popular around here.

My questions are: What kind of MPG increase/decrease did you see? Any pros/cons?
    Pics are always welcome :)

5100's all around, OME 887 with 1/4" spacer, icon 3 leaf aal. 255/75/17 BFG KM's on 4runner pro's. Rigid led pods. Debadged and tinted.
Mine isn't exactly an apple to apples comparison, but here it goes. I had 285's on my 4runner. Big ole heave Toyo at2's. I got about 15 mpg, didn't matter if it was highway or city. I'm running the 255/75 BFG km on my Tacoma. They are a very inefficient tire, a d in still getting around 18 mpg, that's definitely not driving for economy. I didn't notice much of a hit to power, just a smidge on initial takeoff.

I am tire shopping due to not needing mud tires. I will not due a 285 unless it's on an off-road only rig. I will do another 255/75, 255/80, or the widest I will consider is a 275/70

Thanks for the reply, I’m sitting around 15 mpg myself right now. The truck just doesn’t seem to like the extra weight haha. I love the look but really dont want to re-gear. Figured I’d give the 255’s a try once these tires are spent

The fact that you are having power issues with a 40# 285 shows how much the rolling resistance of the wider tire kills power/mpg. My 255 KM's weigh 47#s, but over an inch per tire less of rubber on the road. That's why I'm struggling with going to a 275, I highway drive this truck too much to k.o. it like that.

Mine are 50# 285’s I have on right now. The 255’s I was looking at were 40#. There’s not a huge power loss but enough to definitely know the difference

Lol might be a little while until I do it, only have about 10k on these tires. I’ll report back when I do though

check out my build for details on the kind of weight i carry everyday... Its a lot.
But i have 255 75 17s on, and I'm getting about 15-15.5 around town. If I'm at ideal highway speeds, i can get around 17.5-18.
I had 285s on my 2nd gen, the 255s feel a little snappy-er and more responsive when turning.

I went from 285 70 17 to 255 80 17 ... you can feel the difference right away as it’s not as heavy a tire. As far as mpg go I’m doing close to 300 per tank if I drive normal under 75 mph

Nice looking rig you have there! It makes total sense that 255's would feel snappier. I'd be cutting 40 lbs by making the switch, we shall see how much longer I'll last on these 285's haha

That's great to know! I'm a little torn between 255/75 and 255/80. With only .6 inch height difference than the 285/70, I'm leaning more toward the 255/75's
