Hello! I have a white 2007 4x4 manual regular cab tacoma that was handed down to me that I'm trying to sell. I was hoping to repair a few of the main issues before trying to sell it privately. I'm located in California.

I went into a toyota dealership to get rid of the maintenance lights that have been on since it was handed down to me (and were apparently "not a problem") and after $700 they told me that the computer needs to be replaced ($1500 + 400) to solve the problem. They offered to sell the truck for me and in turn I wouldn't have to pay the $700 repair. Theres a lot of things wrong with the truck so it's a tempting deal. They are suggesting the truck is worth about ~$2000, when I hoped to get about $5000. I guess my question is, should I:

    • accept an offer from the dealership (well under $5000) and have the $700 repair waived or
    • pay the $700 repair, and try to sell it on my own for a higher price
Let me tell you everything about the truck! The dealership made a convincing argument it was not worth $5000, but I'd like to have a second opinion

    2007 4x4 5 speed manual regular cab
    • 131,000 miles
    • no records of maintenance (thanks bro)
    • ABS, Tire pressure, E break and maintenance lights are on - due to broken computer
      • $1900 repair
    • rear sliding window missing
      • $650 repair
    • all tires are worn down
      • $350?
    • right mirror plastic case shattered
    • left headlight case pushed in (left and right are yellowed)
    • AC works, but doesn't turn off 100% of the time
    • dent in rear bumper
    • floor mats missing
    • scratches on the body
There are obviously a lot of issues, but I do hear that manual Tacomas sell quickly. Any advice? Considering the $700 repair the dealership is offering to waive, what might be an acceptable offer from them? What might I be able to get on my own?

Edit: definitely would try to increase the price from the dealer up to $3700

If I knew the dealer was going to switch the repair around on me like that, I would have told them I was considering a higher price, but thats too late now

If you've got a Carmax anywhere nearby, you should at least take the truck in there and see what they'd give you for it. It will most likely be less than you can get selling it yourself, but may be more than the dealership would give you. The dealership's price does seem pretty low.

Sounds like they are trying to rip you off. Try to find a good local mechanic and have them look at it.

I feel like you could 100% part it out for more than the $2k they want to offer you. Also you could always try to get the broken/missing parts from a salvage yard and either install yourself or find a local mechanic to do it on the cheap.

Dealer seems sketchy. 4X4 single cab 2nd gens go for 10k-ish where I am with similar mileage. As far as that repair goes I would get another opinion...

They are fucking you, or trying. I got 4,000 for this pileDSC00138.jpg Your truck is worth 8,500 or more easy!!! Oh ya and that dealer is going to fix most of the problems for 2,500 or less then list it for 15,000 or more as a one owner truck.
