I am not sure that water is gong to flow out of that mesh without pressure behind it. You might want to test it? Cover the end with your finger, fill the hose, and then see if the water flows out.

Also, you'll want to check it as some solids do come out of the A/C drain.

The worst that will happen is some water in the cab, but . . .

How would you get any solids in a condensate drain?

As for the water draining through the filter, I guess I can check and see. I doubt it would have any issue as I figure gravity would be enough to allow water to drain. The mesh I used was a standard water hose mesh which is not very fine. I do not see any concern, but I'll check just to be sure.

I worried about heat like too. I used a little of this to protect the section of hose closest to the exhaust:

REAL easy to get solids in the condensate... The atmosphere is nothing but a cloud of small, reactive particles suspended in a gas. Once in water, they'll react with each other, the components of the AC, and everything else they can in an attempt to make you drink more beer. Some of them are even alive and will breed! Heck, the AC system itself can be seen as a huge trap built to capture anything floating in your cabin air.

There can be calcium build up. Not to mention all the fun stuff that can clog evaporators.

On the gravity side, we only have about a foot of head pressure. That is a fraction of a PSI. Not enough to break surface tension. This is why some folks enlarge the drain holes in the bed. House pressure is about 75psi.

Not a big deal. Just a caution. I like the general idea though.

I did not consider any type of build-up, but I'll keep an eye on that.

Also didn't consider your point on having enough pressure to break the surface tension. I'll have to check that out. Not sure if I will get much of a chance for a while, though.

I was thinking... if I just stuck like a paperclip through that mesh, that would break the surface tension and should let it drain, right?

I used a pipe cleaner when the drain hose on my wife's Prius clogged due to mold. Water gushed out as soon as that pipe cleaner went in there. I suppose a paperclip would work just as well if it was long enough.

I was thinking of leaving a paperclip hooked into the mesh to break the surface tension at the screen and let the water flow out. I'm hoping I don't get to the point where mine is clogged up.

I think the only reason hers did is that a yellow jacket got up there and croaked, then the mold grew up around him.

    Blech.

Are you sure that you have a problem? If you run your AC, does no water drain out? If not, do you get drainage if you remove the mesh?

There is much more than simple surface tension at play here, you've got vibrations, impurities in the water and air, all the crap kicked up off the road, etc.

I'm not all that sure that the surface tension will cause a problem. If it does, then you would be able to keep 12" of water in a garden hose (or a bucket, for that matter) with that kind of mesh, so you've got a pretty easy way to test this outside of the truck.

I still have to check, but I was just throwing out an idea I had at lunch about a way if water was not dripping out. Problem is that we are pretty cold and dry right now, so not much moisture to test it condensing on the A/C.

I have no idea about the paper clip. They are usually mild steel and tend to rust though.

You wouldn't need to pull the hose out. Just pull it off up top and pour some water in?

I pulled on the stock hose quite a bit while doing this mod, and I was afraid that I might have disconnected or kinked it where I could not see it. I was pretty relieved to see water dripping during the post-test.

If you're not getting water, you might have a problem upstream of everything that you added.

I don't believe there is anymore to the OE hose that what you see. I believe it is molded in to the outlet. All one rubber part.

Getting it off that fitting I put on is not going to happen. I have a 6" piece left, so I will use it and a spare screen and just pour some water in it and see if it drains.

I put one of the screens on the extra hose I had and there was no issue w/ water flow. I had the faucet on a small trickle and it flowed through no problem. Guessing that the screen is breaking any surface tension, so I'm not worried.

Finally got a humid day down here. I checked the A/C drain when I got home and it was dripping just fine. It had one large puddle pretty quick just parked in the driveway. No issues there, so I'm not worried about it.
