Should I remove before going offroad?

Is there any reasonable use in a stuck situation to lift the tire and pack something underneath to gtfo?

2. If you are lifting a truck from the rear or from under the frame to lift a wheel, wrap a strap around your rear axle to the frame on the same side you want to lift the wheel to help raise it off the ground (or out of a ditch) sooner.

yeah for sure. Like if your diff or something important like the oil pan is on a rock you wouldn't want to just drag it off you could do more damage.

 

You can remove them with a wrench, or the trail will do it without a wrench. Your choice.

Definitely. I’ve used that attachment before to lift wheels out of the crud and pile rocks, cut tree limbs, or TREDs underneath. It will work fine in most cases, just watch for the hi-lift to lean inward and contact the fender while lifting. And make sure you have something to place the jack base on (like a 2x10 plank) to distribute the weight and give it a flat surface.

 

Is that thing normal on an offroad or a pro? Seems pretty low...

Don’t worry about that for now. You will be fine. Go slow, and if you get into terrain that is really going to bash off your exhaust, you’ll know it well before it starts happening. Don’t do “preemptive strikes” against anything important on your truck, until you determine where your comfort level is off-road, and what your truck is capable of, and also what you enjoy. Personally, I don’t want to go down a trail that will destroy my Tacoma.....I’m more into it for the places the truck can take me, if that makes sense.

 

there’s a long discussion thread about this on TW- I pointed out how fumes can get into the back (inside a shell) through the cubby holes and upper edges of the fender wells, especially if you are idilling or driving slow like during technical 4wd’ing. I’d be cautious with this mod if you have a bed cap.

 

It can raise one of the front tires off the ground at a time by using the strap adapter (useful if you need to put rocks under them for ditch crossing, for placing a jack stand underneath, etc.,) but you are right, its not useful for changing the front tire if you don’t have a jack stand, especially if the hilift is the only thing holding it up!

I put a Curt front hitch receiver on my truck under my stock front bumper, so I can use my hilift on both ends using the receivers as jack points.

 

Take them off. A friend or more acquaintance didn't and damaged his door when it bent up into the door.

Exactly. This guy was extra special though, before I ever pulled the camera out I tried to tell him stop and get pulled out and lets move the ice first. Some people want to learn the hard way it seems.

The hi lift is mostly useless unless you have sliders, the hitch or plan to use a chain or strap......try it out on level ground first, you'll see how sketchy it is and imagine that on some off camber hill.
Also keep in mind that they can be super dangerous and and drop or slip off their load very easily.

If you're going solo use common sense and don't get in anything where you wish you had another truck to pull you out or go get parts.
My buddies were wheeling in iirc Calico and both had snapped an axle in their SAS'd pathfinders; those rears are very strong, like a 9".
They had to share an axle to get out of there, took them all night. Drive a ways then remove the axle and out it in the other truck.....crazy.

Temps have been in the 20's around 6-8am and maybe low 50's if the wind isn't blowing.

I've been working very lose to that spot for the past three weeks, up form the mine......what's out that way?
Also been out on Cima and Nipton roads a bunch but mostly for work....now it gets dark too early to do anything after work.

 

Caruthers Canyon is unique for what grows there- it’s a relic island of habitat left from the Pleistocene that is similar to that found closer to the coast, including scrub oaks and such. It’s scenic and unusual looking due to what grows there compared to the surrounding area. Clark Mtn is remote- both are cool places to camp. It’s better weather there during spring and summer, definitely gets cold as you know during the winter. Its amazing how big and high the Cima dome is out there, and for that how varied the desert looks there. I worked out there a few years back too- nice places to explore!

 

At least it gets light. You have twice as much daylight as me right now.
