i only ask as my POS isn't 4wd and i haven't actually looked at the starter. it starts, it runs, it drives, when (if) it stops doing any one of those, i'll look at it.

I happened across a thread about someone disassembling a starter in place because it quit, didn't make sense to me then, still doesn't, i just never checked my own junk to see whats involved.

THOUGH, on first gen 5spd/3rd gen 4Runner V6 a 1.8kw starter from an automatic with fit (tightly) in place of the 1.4kw starter the manual trans setup uses

I am not sure if you still can but it use to be Toyota would sell brush kits. I use to replace many of those brush kits on Corolla and Camrys. I will say the 2wd and 4wd Tacomas are probably the same difficulty not sure of the manuals but I would say not that bad. I would never try and disassemble this starter in the vehicle to replace the brushes.

I read several threads where guys tool the driveshaft out, disassembled the starter to pull it out in pieces, @Red Baron said he read a thread where they took the exhaust out.

We just took the break line mount @ the frame loose moved it out of the way and pulled it out the wheel well. Easy peezy! Also could pretty much get to all the bolts right there as well!

IF you get a parts counter person that is helpful, yes, you can get the contacts and brushes ( for alternator as well) they may or may not have them in stock, which sucks when you need shit NOW, its usually the contacts that erode in the solenoid that cause the issue.

Back when i had my '85, i kept several starters on hand and carried one when off road as i would routinely use the starter to climb with out disengaging the clutch (this is why they have the clutch cancel button on the dash) never burned one up. Oddly, i now have new in the box starters on my service van most of the time, exact same one i carried spares for. and its still the contacts and plunger that burn/wear out.

Troof right there, only things that we had to move was the tire, rear splash guard, and coiled brake line to get to it. From the threads that I was reading I thought that we would have to take out much more than that to have the space to get it out but just wasn't the case thanks to stubborn thought and experience lol

Cool looked like it wouldn't be bad to get it out the side, glad you got a hand to do it. You just replaced it? When I need to do mine I will open it up and replace the contacts if that's what fails. I've already pulled my Alternator apart and replaced the Diodes, inexpensive and not bad to replace.

There are other failures but this is what fails if 99% of all starters. With the alternator though it could be several things that fail, diodes being one.

Yet that does no look like the starter off of those corollas IIRC. It get's a little complicated with the gear reduction starters like for racing applications and the lovely Chrysler corp liked to use or the old fords where they liked to put the solenoid remotely from the starter motor. There are many contacts that could fail in the starter but the brushes and contacts are the normal failure mode, at least in Toyotas. Also I have bench tested starters like that and they work but are "weak "and they can't start an engine due to to much resistance in the contacts.

Here is a good break down of a starter assembly
