They look so happy! I've thought about trying that with mine but I'm afraid he would run under the truck like an idiot or get bored and run off on his own. I'll still probably try sometime but need to get him responding to commands better when he gets distracted. He's been pretty rebellious recently at 6-7 months but I expect it to pass as he gets a little older.

Being in a good area probably helps. I'll try sometime. I started to work on off leash training and he started to act up on walks after a month and didnt want to listen to me. I'm chalking it up as him just being a rebellious teenager. Overall hes a great pup and is doing really well with learning commands.

Teach the here or come command in the house. Scatter bags of treats in all rooms. Say the command and treat when they come. Repeat for weeks on end. Then do in a fenced area. Then grab a 15 foot leash and do it in a field with distractions around. 6-8 weeks from now, you can have a dog you trust off leash. Stick with it. Don't over do it. And make it fun. A dog will never want to come back to an owner if they're not sure what to expect. If it's always positive, they'll enjoy it, and so will you.

I have been doing exactly that. Treats are always in reach and I started in the house and then the back yard. He was doing really well on walks for a month or 2 and then started rebelling. I'll get back to it when we are away from the house but for now I'm working on making sure he isnt going to ignore me at a bad time.

    She's a husky shepherd mix!

Another game to play is before breakfast or dinner (when he's hungry) have a handful of food in one hand and some good treats in another. Throw out a piece of food and when he comes back on his own give him a treat. Keep doing this and you'll watch he comes back to you sooner each time. The first couple you might have to tell him to come so he understands the game. He does not get a treat til he goes to get the food and comes back. This teaches that the world is a cool place and it's okay to explore, but you always have the best (treats) life has to offer. It's been working great with my 4 month old pup.

Make it fun. At first my pup was so confused haha but after playing a couple times she has a blast with it. We walked her off leash last camping trip to test it and I gave her treats every time she came to me on her own. So it was like playing the game outside but instead of food it's new smells. Seems to be working great.

All this treat talk has made me hungry. :D

Just remember that at some point, you won’t have them. Which is why you want to slowly work toward treats only occasionally and use them in your every day activities, not just when you train.

50 pounds is a big beagle! Ours is surprisingly quiet too. He's crate trained so he's left in the crate when we're not home (together with our beagle-dachshund mix) and the only time he howls is after we come home and he wants let out to eat/play/go outside. Otherwise, he's pretty much mute, which is awesome. I've only ever heard him bark a handful of times. Now, our beagle-dachshund on the other hand...he never shuts up!

Yeah hence him getting diabetes so he went on a diet down to normal beagle weight to 28lbs and looked like a totally different dog and like he was supposed to.

For bloat we did a stomach tack (gastropexy) along with no vigorous activity an hour before or after eating(this is easy as great Danes are generally lazy) Cecil eats 10-14 cups of food a day-to-day bloat was/is a real concern for us, neighbor lost her German shepherd from bloat, not fun

    Some really cool shit
Wife threw a Christmas party yesterday at our house for her friends from work. One guy had flown in from a short vacation in NYC, that morning. On Saturday he was walking from his hotel to a local pub. He passed a dog rescue office. Saw this designer dog and had to have it. Guess they’re all the rage for female socialites. It’s a Yorky Chihuahua mix. This little guy is just over 4 months, and won’t get much bigger than a guinea pig.
