If the post contains the date the picture was taken in bold/underlined font, and the location the picture was taken, this means that I took the picture(s) myself! There are also few non-Toyota brochures in here at the beginning since I had an older thread merged into this one (Rolls-Royce; You're in for a treat)!

 

A guy I know who lives abroad, and whom I consider to be THE "Rolls-Royce Extraordinaire" (for lack of a better term), sent me this Japanese-market brochure along with several other rare and unique brochures (and other literature). I've got two Rolls-Royce brochures, two Bentley brochures, a 1966 Imperial (Chrysler) brochure, and a 1966 Duesenberg (Yes, THAT Duesenberg) brochure, plus some rare 1970s Rolls-Royce literature.

My friend believes that this is a 2003 Century brochure. Not that it really matters as the Century in it's current form was released in 1997 and remains virtually unchanged for 2017. The newest ones are equipped with backup cameras as standard. Also, the 5.0L V12 powering all 1997-2017 Century automobiles has pretty much the same horsepower as the 5.7L V8 powering the newer Tundras.

I came across this car while visiting family in Monterey for Christmas, back in December 2010! My aunt and uncle's neighbor inherited it from a deceased relative who bought it new...

I've been back to my aunt and uncle's house twice since then (January 2015 and October 2017, respectively) and the neighbor no longer seems to have it. At the time, this was a 22-year old, previously elderly-owned Toyota with less than 40K original miles! On top of that, it had automatic and A/C! Perfect starter car for a millennial just learning how to drive!

Moving onto the interior...

A bit dusty, but in pretty good condition!



If I remember correctly, I came to the conclusion that this car did not have air-conditioning from the factory and that this was actually a dealer-installed A/C system. The owner gave me the keys and let me fire the car up. Despite it being in December, it was warm enough in Monterey when I took these picture to determine whether or not the A/C was working. I cranked up the A/C and it was not blowing cold. I'm guessing that the compressor and other major components were in working condition and it just needed a Freon charge...

Also, I'm 99% sure this car still R-12 and had never been retrofitted to R134a...

If were to have hypothetically bought this car, I know plenty of people who have a sizeable stash of R-12 and I could have this A/C cranking out finger-numbing air in no time!

 

Those bumpers back then were somethin else!

 

Less than 40K original miles!

 

A radio was an extra-cost option on many Toyota models (including pickups and Camrys) back in the 1980s, and like the air-conditioner in this car, I am 99% this was a dealer-installed Toyota tape deck...



If I remember correctly, the radio did in fact work...

Unfortunately, while I did have my iPod with me, I did not have a car kit adapter or my trusty Bat Out of Hell cassette to really put this system through its paces...

If I remember correctly, the original owner managed to do this not long before she died and that's what resulted in her family forcing her to give up driving; I forget her relation to the woman she left the car to when she died...

NOTE: These pictures were also taken back in December 2010.

This car was owned by the same woman who inherited the red 1988 Tercel, and while it wasn't as clean as the Tercel, it had low miles for its age and was in great running condition (I'd consider any older vehicle capable of passing California smog to be in good running condition)...




NOTE: The hood is only open because I opened it. This car was not broken down or being worked on. I do not know why I didn't get any pics of it with the hood closed...




I know that the owner did not inherit the Corolla from deceased friend or relatively, and I actually think she may have bought it new! I'm pretty sure this Corolla is a 1991 model. This woman and her husband also had a 1993ish Toyota Previa... They had a home in Monterey and obviously were not poor, so I don't know why they had three older Toyotas and no newer vehicles...

By the way, this one had just over 100K miles...

Unlike the dealer-installed air-conditioner in the Tercel, the factory-installed A/C in this Corolla was actually still operational according to the owner (I didn't start it, but this car definitely still had R-12)...
