They keep creeping up the prices because people just accept it and pay for it. Sales 101 - Supply and demand. I'm still rocking a cheap, old person phone that cost maybe $50.

It pisses me if you can't plop down$200 and get a new phone anymore. And yes I know it's the same as the newer plans with an extra monthly lease payment vs being built into plan pricing. However the new plans are still more expensive than mine( still running OG iPhone 1 unlimited data/ text plan with 700minutes/ rollover). Last year I ended up just buying my Motorola moto z play for like $300 on sale. Paying $1000 is just fucking nuts.

I bet more people would stick with older phones if the carriers didn't all automatically assume you were going to take 2-3 years to pay for the device.

I'd suspect the average person would be unable to (or just won't want to) drop $1000 all at once for a phone, but won't care too much about $30/month.

I got into a verbal boxing match with the sales guy at Verizon about this a while back when they switched over to the monthly payment plans... mostly because I am very likely to break my phone and dont want to owe money on a broken phone... and the insurance is crazy! if you have a new phone it can be over $200 to get it replaced through the insurance

I stopped buying phones through at&t cause every time we went in to upgrade they'd be like you have to switch to the new plans, we can't do unlimited data anymore. And every time I have to just get the manager and have them look up my original contract and they find out they can't do anything of the sort and I can keep my OG plan. Last time I did that was my wife's iPhone 6 a few years ago. It's getting time to put that thing out to pasture and I think we're just going to scrap it and she'll swap the # over to her work phone and just use that so we are only paying for 1 cell phone and never have to pay to upgrade hers.

Check out best buy. Iirc it's like $75 for a protection plan, and I think $100 deductable. At least that's what mine is. I've bought my last 3 phones through best buy and have had to get a few fixed and they've been great.

Yea I had to give up my unlimited... I was grandfathered in on an old Iphone that stopped picking up WiFi so it used data for everything. The guy at the store looked up my data use and I think his jaw hit the floor hahahah. That phone was toasted though so I had to get a new one and thats when I had to give it up.

Separate note - I think I am done with Iphones --- looking at either the samsung or google phones for my next one... but cant stand the prices...

damn iphone costs 30-50 dollars to produce........let's charge 1k, they'll buy it anyhow........I wish you could still sign up for 2yr contracts and get a free phone. My mother and I did that all the time through tmobile. Then everybody dropped contracts and phone deals but sprint still had decent phone deals going on at the time so that's who we have now. But now to buy a phone would be ridiculous, it's absolutely stupid how much they want. If I could though my next would either be a google pixel or another HTC.

I switched from a Iphone 5s to a galaxy s7 edge last year. The only thing I don't like is that all of my group chats with people who have iphones got messed up. Also it comes with too many freaking apps, there are Samsung and Verizon apps for each basic task I think bloatware is the term for that stuff. I might switch phones soon, maybe a Pixel2 or s8. definitely not going back to iphones.
