Definitely test drive. I fell in love with the idea of the Tacoma, the looks and interior but wasn’t crazy about how it performed wrt engine and trans. Over 10k miles now and I like some things about it but not the way it drives or shifts. Believe it when you test drive it..bcuz it won’t get better

But I feel there's a big difference as ride quality would be a factor at least for me in how the truck drives not just strictly powertrain.

But unlike most people (I never had any other Gen so maybe that's it) I have no issues with the transmission and this "mystery shifting" people talk about then again I don't drive very far or very often. I turn the ECT button when I feel froggy and it has a good pep. These aren't built for speed.

Definitely a ride difference, but since he was so concerned about the drivetrain and is not going to get to overnight a Pro the best thing he could do is a normal test drive to feel how the Pro rides and then do an overnight with another model to see if he can live with the drivetrain.
