    As the thread states...

I have been involved in quite a few recoveries over the years, but mostly since I've become involved in the off road world. I created a local Facebook page for folks local to me to ask for help and network for recovery purposes.

I'll post up some pics of the most sketchy one I've been a part of later. It was pretty impressive. At least in my opinion.

A guy flipped his Jeep end over end down into a ravine at least 100 ft. It was snowing, the road was packed ice, and it was narrow. We used 4 winches, with 3 of us being strapped to trees on the opposite side of the road. 5.5 hours of winching, cutting brush and trees with the chainsaw, and freezing our asses off, we finally daisy chained our trucks together and drove down the ditch to pull him the final/steepest section.

I was looking at a house in the desert and the road turned but there weren't any signs, it looked like it kept going... and it did... but it was no longer a road. It became a giant sand pit. I was in my 2wd F250 7.3 and the 7,000 pounds just sank it axle deep. A guy who lived nearby was nice enough to try and get me out. He had a 95 Dodge 2500 diesel that got just as stuck. I called a 4x4 recovery company who came out around midnight and started getting the Dodge out, he hit the gas to try and back out and blew a transmission line, coated the hot engine with transmission fluid and burst into flames. There was no water, only sand, so we dumped it on to kill the flames and things went smoothly from there. I still feel bad about his truck.

Nothing too exciting here. 2WD long travel friend got stuck in a field about 60 seconds after I said, "If he goes in there, we're gonna get a call that he's stuck."
He also believes that more skinny pedal is better.

    IMG_4071.jpg

this one was a muddy situation that my old xterra saved the day in.....sketchy due to 3 recovery straps hooked together to avoid getting the 2nd rig stuck...

Truck drivers can be dumb. This guy missed the driveway while trying to turn in.

His first suggestion for recovering the vehicle was "can y'all pick up the front with the forklift?"

His second suggestion was to try to pull on the trailer, which was at a 90 degree angle to the tractor

    [IMG] [IMG]

We used to have a big grass median and would have to get sunken trucks out about once a month, but it's paved now.

Anyway, recovery was eventually effected by our standard method for these things, which is to flag down a passing dump truck and have the dump truck pull him out using a couple of lengths of 1" grade 100 chain. A dump truck in first gear can pull anything.

That's a nice looking xterra. Was it pretty capable off road?

yeah man! the truck was awesome! don't think I ever got that thing bogged. little underpowered with a small v6 and all that weight..like 14mpg downhill with a tailwind but definitely and awesome truck to wheel and take offload. just as capable as that jeep its pulling out with a lot more ground clearance. _MG_8318.jpg

Not a Tacoma but “attempted” recovery nonetheless.

30k pound 4x4 digger derrick axle deep in mud. My buddy driving got a little gas happy when he started to spin a little..
To make a long story short we had to be pulled from about 220’ away. JimBobs towing LLC from the nearest town showed up and didn’t have even half that worth of line. So we tried to adapt and overcome by linking our nylon yank straps together to reach his line. His line failed.. but our stretchy straps did the damage.
The D ring 150 ft (3 straps from the truck) slingshotted that far, through the windshield, and off the passengers seat headrest. My buddy got lucky. I’ll never watch that happen again..
Obvious reminder to get the proper help when you need it and not be a hero.

Got the pole changed tho ;)

Long story and this is the only pic I got! Sorry!

IMAG0418.jpg no Tacoma involved, loaded mixer truck with 8 yds on we had to unload it in order to pull it out, it was pretty close to rolling over.

Well, wish I had pics, but was alone in my sr5 open diff, time to change the tires truck.
It had rained, got a Power puller ~3 weeks ago, so got daring on a greasy hill. Made it first time, started to rain more, but felt like trying again.
Slid into the very deep ruts going uphill, deeper ruts behind me, 8 pm.
Tried everything to not get the come along out, till eventually had to do it.
Got me out of some trouble, but slid backwards into really deep ruts. Rains coming down good, getting dark.
Managed to dig and back out finally, drenched, dark, and almost 10pm.
Down the gravel road, something's not right. The damn parking brake seized (happened in winter, was good all summer so far). Made to paved road, going downhill, still seized. 2 vehicles slowed down, but raced away as soon as they got by me. Fuck yous! Don't need your help! Had a small pipe and wrench, banged the shit out of left rear drum, finally released.
Again, wish I had pics, but was alone and ticked off.
Thank God I'm half prepared now for self recovery.
Time to change that parking brake cable, eh?
Oh, and I'm truly impressed with this truck. I reved the shit out of it trying to get out and whatnot, and the 2008, 200k km beast still runs good.
(Guess I need some of them traction boards now. Or else stay out of greasy mud.)
