    04 prerunner here

the A/C is perfectly cold, but can't get heat. both in and out hoses to heater core are warm. when you turn the heat on the heater valve doesn't move. I took the cable off and turned it manually and still no heat. If I move the knob left to right rapidly I don't hear the blend door opening and closing. On my corolla I can audibly hear it opening and closing.

If the blend door isn't working or stuck shut would that cause the heater valve not to work as well? I'm assuming the valve is good if opening it manually doesn't change temp. Living in TX it really doesn't matter to me, but if it is an easy cheap fix I'm all for it...

tl;dr: Radiator fluid is full, ac works fine through all vent modes, only thing I'm not getting is heat. any guidance appreciated :D

The blend door and water valve are controlled by the same servo motor.

Mine exploded on me at a red light(heater valve), so do check it. Sends antifreeze everywhere, makes for a hellacious steam show.
    Part is$50 at Zatozone.

Great! well that explains it. I'll see if I can find a used servo motor :)

Thanks! The link I posted with that info is apparently a 'pornographic' website per my work firewall... That was a tad discerning

I have a 1998 and the temp control has gotten wonky. I can turn it to full heat and it's super hot air. But as I start dialing it back to cooler it literally does nothing until I get all the way to the coldest setting, then it blows cold air. Really no happy medium. And the point at which it switches from hot to cold is arbitrary if I'm rotating the knob clockwise or counterclockwise.

I have so many aftermarket wires stuffed behind the center dash now. Aftermarket radio, switchbacks, Cobra 75wxst's remote module, etc. Could all these wires be snagging something manually/mechanically?

Also noticed that if the air is set to fresh air intake there is no difference between the fan setting "off" and "1" (first velocity setting) when I'm driving. Air is literally blowing through the vents if I have it set to off and I'm moving. Of course when I come to a stop the air flow stops as well (when set to off).

98 is all cable driven so you might need to check the tolerance on both cables. in my case a servo controls both the valve and the air mixer. I'll let Jon reply with a more expert response, but that is what I've figured out so far.

Correct 98 is all cable operated. So check your cables. As far as fresh air door. What your describing is normal. Air comes in thru the cowl area, which is a high air pressure point when truck is moving.

Thanks. I thought it was all cable driven. I'm petrified to pull that center dash out... it's going to projectile vomit wires all over the place. But I need to clean it up for sure. I think that's the root of my issue.

Also - @mechanicjon I never had the air flow issue before until recently. In the past when the fan blower was switched to off, it would impede the flow of air even when at driving speeds. Anything off the top of your head, other than switching it to recirculation, that I can look for when I eventually pull the center dash out?

    Thanks in advance.

Got my on the outside air flow. Mine has always done it. I just switch to recirculate.

So I finally got the truck in my driveway and got the servo motor out and did the test per the page and the motor spins, but it doesn't spin from cold to hot range... it spins about a full 180 before it stops in each way. The internals look fine. What actually provides power to this servo? Can I test for power coming to the wire that powers the servo? Do we know which fuse to check for supplies power to this servo?

I feel like the servo is fine, maybe when I took it apart and put it back together I didn't get the arm lined up right and that is why it spins pretty much full circle.

damn good info for sure. looks like my control switch may be bad then. I'll have to grab some 1.5v batteries and try and finagle some kind of testing apparatus.. will prob try and snag the panel from a parts truck

Ok.. here's a question for ya... So the heater control valve is stuck open and the vent was closed... I took the servo out and tested it and it seems to be working... I wanted heat so I opened the blend door by hand which was surprisingly easy and a quick fix. I live in TX where it gets cold about a month out of the year. Is it bad to leave the heater control valve open 24/7/365 and just open and close the air mixer by hand? I'm content to just leave the servo removed and troubleshoot this issue this summer when it is warm outside. :p

You can leave the heater valve open but it will be warmer cool air when you move blend door to cool.
