I've made a few humidors. Spanish cedar is great to line the box with because of the smell and it helps to regulate the humidity, but it is a very boring and soft wood. I wouldn't want a humidor that is just Spanish Cedar. I would go with a solid hardwood for the outside and then line it with 1/4" thick Spanish cedar.

Helps with aging and holds the humidity well. I was looking for something rustic.
Do you have any pictures? I love golden oak and spiral maple I think it's called. How did they turn out?

Anyone ever work with the old growth wood recovered from the bottom of the great lakes from back when they used to do logging? I saw a program on it, some of the logs have been at the bottom for over a hundred years and preserved really well.

Built some stairs from river recovered long leaf yellow pine a number of years ago. Other than the grain being way tighter that today's pine, it machined just like regular wood. But it was gorgeous. Plus add in the cool factor that the trees the boards were made from were standing when the pilgrims landed.

My Uncle was a very good wood worker. Over the years he made several things for family members. ( I still have a solid wood toy box he built for me when I was a child) I went to visit him several years ago and asked him what he had been working on and he took me out to the other garage on his property and showed me a solid wood casket he had built complete with padded denim lining. I asked him who he built it for and he said it was his to be buried in. Six years later we buried him in it. he was 82. all my Uncles were real cool but he was the coolest.

Ok I saw the other two pieces you had glued together. what did you do after this? I realize its end pieces. how did you glue the checker boards together. I like the look of the cherry, walnut and maple.

He used to try and build all the projects in the Popular Mechanics magazine. When I was 15 I spent the summer with him and we built this jet ski type boat it had handle bars and you sat on your knees while driving it. It was a blast KOOL old dude.
