    I have a 2010 2.7 manual 4x4

Last night on the way to work, the clutch started to slip. It only happened in 4th or 5th speed.

It happened again on the way home. Prior to yesterday, it’s been pretty much trouble free.

I don’t know if it would make a difference, but yesterday was the really first cold day of the season. (-5)

Is the clutch disc trashed or is it in the hydraulic system?

There's a lot of talk about bad 4 cylinder clutches from these years (08ish-11ish I think it what I've read). At one point I think there was a recall. How many miles on yours? Most people who have problems describe it being worse or only existing when it's cold out.

Personally my clutch chatters and shakes the truck like crazy starting in 1st on cold mornings (I'm talking 45F and below). It's at 175K and I already purchased an Aisin CKT-065 that I will be installing soon. Word is I might have an LUK clutch in there from the factory, which had lots of issues that are well documented on this forum.

Sounds like the asin clutch is the way to go as far as a replacement goes? Or is there a better aftermarket one that I should look at?

There's a few aftermarket options but you're looking at $300-$500 and who knows what the pedal feel or performance is going to feel like. I don't want a stiff pedal and I don't want an on/off switch. Quality clutch with stock feel and performance is exactly what I want and all indications are that Aisin CKT 065 is the best for that. My friend just installed one in his 07 regular cab and he says it's smooth like butter.

I would like to get an aisin clutch, but this time of the year shipping times suck.

As a result i may have to try something else. Advance has car quest brand in stock locally. Anyone have experience with them?

Do the OEM TSB clutch. The original clutch was undersized for the 159 hp 2.7 and the TSB paired a stronger pressure plate from an older 190 hp V6 and a better disc. If you want part numbers or the TSB etc. post back and tag me.

Another option is Marlin Crawler https://www.marlincrawler.com/

Members are saying Marlins clutch is excellent . They offer a clutch with better clamping force than a factory clutch
Flywheel machining is mandatory with any new clutch or you void your new clutch warranty . It is very easy to tell if the machining process was skipped should a warranty issue pop up .
On another note , if the clutch is slipping , Its the clutch pressure plate clamping force to blame . The Clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder are used for apply and release of the clutch

OP, for the 5 speed here is the so called heavy duty version of the OEM clutch that was developed to address the problem. I like it because it is OEM and eliminates the guessing game choosing aftermarket clutches. T-SB-0066-11, Rev. 1, was issued June 28, 2011. It is attached and the parts are on page 2.

Why would a heavy duty clutch/additional clamping force be needed for a 159 hp engine?

^^ Because the original clutch was based on the older 2.7 that made less hp and as we came to find out was barely marginal for the 2nd gen.

The only evidence I've been able to find that supports anything like this is the old TSB that replaces the LUK clutch, which is the one that is known to be problematic (slipping), with an Aisin. I've never heard of a single person having problems with a factory replacement Aisin.

There’s like a 9 hp difference in the two...

Marlin doesn’t do clutches for second gens either

There were originally two suppliers of clutches put in the 5 speeds: LUK and AISIN. Apparently at the factory it was possible to get occasional mismatched sets such as one manufacturer's disc paired with the other's pressure plate.

The LUK was the primary problem child causing early slipping. But the AISIN was not without fault depending on which combination of parts from the many revisions that had been made and factory mix-matching that occurred on occasion and faults of its own. Two links are attached at the bottom. They are a good compendium of the history of this problem starting in post no. 2 of each link. The author shemp, had done more research on this than anyone but was later banned for some reason.

The original parts diagrams for replacement clutches on the 5 speed listed a Type A and a Type B. The Type A was the problem LUK and the dealer parts department staffs would more frequently order the Type A by default because it appeared first on the list and an owner would actually get a the LUK components even if they originally had the AISIN clutch to begin with. So the problem began to snowball.

Shemp's posts are correct in the link in that there was a flurry of part revisions and reports of early slipping with some AISIN versions are rare but some have surfaced probably because of the improper pairing of discs and pressure plates, and a problem of their own being complaints of chattering and noise which led to yet another TSB in 2011.

About 2012 the OEM parts manuals suddenly dropped the availability of the Type A (LUK) clutch parts and only listed the Type B (AISIN). To make matters even more confusing, more recently the AISIN clutch components which originally had the listing of Type B has been relabeled as Type A.

One final note I might add is this post made by the same author shemp linked above but on another forum, and different user name, about the clutch sizing with the 5 speed in the 2TR-FE as follows:

"And just to add more part numbers for fun, the "older" Toyota/AISIN pressure plate number (31210-26172) cross references to an AISIN CTX-106. The newer one (31210-35291) cross references to an AISIN CTX-107.

    The 106 corresponds to 3RZ-FE (150 HP 4-cyl)
    The 107 corresponds to 5VZ-FE (190 HP 6-cyl)

Heh heh... almost seems that Toyota was underclutching these things. The 2TR-FE is vastly more powerful than the 3RZ-FE."
