Just came across this issue. Taco came from another shop for a tire replacement and this is how the lug nut came apart. Just sharing on here. First time I've seen this happen personally.

For lack of a torque wrench , or the sense to use one.

I had this same thing happen to me while taking off my wheels to swap to summer wheels.
Cheap ass lugnuts. Others have swollen and or caps came off..
What's everyone use aftermarket lugnuts for alloy wheels?
    I'm not paying toyota prices

Factory lug nut torque is only 83 ft lbs. A good impact can easily exceed 300 ft lbs.

Hopefully they didn’t damage the threads or stretch the stud

When a torque wrench is used and set right, 83 ft lbs is really not that much. I always see people really push/pulling on a tire tool to tighten lug nuts and just think how over board it is.

I have had that happen on my truck and they never seen air tools of any type and torqued to 80 ftlbs.
I think the design of the lug nut makes that the weak spot.
You can get new ones at napa for about 2 bucks apiece.
I run summer and winter tires so every year I go to napa and buy a couple to change out the ones that the cover is getting mucked up on.

Had the same issue with my wife’s Mazda after the Mazda dealer had the front wheels off to die a water pump on warranty. Two weeks later I went to rotate the tires and broke my breaker bar trying to get them lose. Ended up going to Napa 3 time for 2 13/16 to hammer on stripped lugs, a new breaker bar and 25 new lug nuts. Luckily Napa is only a 3 block walk from my house and next to the beer store.

Holy cow. Someone way over cranked that.

When I got my Method NV's I had to order special splined lug nuts. Helped with vibration since Methods are not 108mm hub centric. Think they're like 110mm or something. The lug nut change fixed all that though!

I've been using these lug nuts for 20 years. I have never seen this before with hand tools

Some people shouldn't be allowed to use air tools.

Personally, I only every use my impact to remove stuck bolts or fasteners. I live in the rust belt, so my impact saves my rear more times than I would like. But what ever goes back on is done with a ratchet and torque wrench, lug nuts included.

Sorry this happened to you OP. Like someone else said, check to see if the stud is damaged. If not it's not expensive/hard to replace, but a pain in the ass no less.
