The 2nd Gen Tacoma DOES in fact have a telescoping steering column!

I've met a large number of 2nd Gen Tacoma owners, both in person and on TW, who had no idea that their truck has a telescoping steering column.

I've been considering starting this thread for a little while, and after being encouraged by another member, I decided to go through with it.

Every 2nd Gen owner knows that their truck has a tilt steering column (this has been standard since the 2nd gen first came out in late 2004 as a 2005 model).

To operate the telescoping feature, simply pull down on the same lever used for the tilt steering. Push the steering wheel in and pull it out...

    There you go!

What I find strange is that the 2nd Gen Tacoma had things like a CD player and a telescoping steering column standard, but air-conditioning did not become standard until 2011. Intermittent wipers are still not standard equipment, even in 2018 3rd Gen models!

Intermittent wipers weren’t standard on second gens... Also neither was cruise control. I wish I had both of them

Exactly what I'm saying! Intermittent wipers have never been standard in Tacomas, from 1995 all the way up to 2018!

However, it is possible to install intermittent wipers. You didn't know this? I put intermittent wipers in my truck!

Sorry I thought you said they were standard. My bad I’m a little dyslexic lol. And yeah I know I can add both of them but it’s a little extra cash I just don’t have at the moment

    You at least have A/C?

I've seen ONE 2nd GEN that came from the factory without air-conditioning. It was a red 2005-2008 RC 5-lug 2WD, and I saw it up in Maine.

I have a/c. Never use it lol I also don’t have a slider. The only options my truck has is 4wd and a/c. Other than that it’s all standard equipment

I'd LOVE to have your truck! 5-speed and 4-wheel drive!

Do you have a sound system in it?

I highly recommend that you "exercise" your A/C system. If you just never use it, the system won't be lubricated by the refrigerant oil, the lines can rot as a result, and the refrigerant will leak out. By now, you might even need a charge. My truck was a gift from my dad, bought brand new back in September 2009. The A/C started to show signs of needing a recharge in June 2017 with 75K miles on the odometer. Got it recharged, but strangely enough my mechanic could not find any leaks. Conclusion: 7 years of freeze/thaw cycles caused the lines and seals to shrink and expand, letting R134a leak out over time. In June 2017, my A/C abruptly started blowing warm on the passenger side (but cold on the driver's side). After a charge, it's blowing anywhere from 38°F to 45°F, depending on various factors...

The non-JBL factory systems in 2nd Gen Tacomas are SHIT. We hadn't even driven mine off the lot yet, and I thought I'd blown the speakers. Mine's a 2010, so I had an AUX input from the factory. I plugged my iPod into it, selected Pour Some Sugar on Me, and cranked it all the way up. I compare my factory speakers to what you might find in a Fisher-Price tape records. We got the truck in September 2009 right after I got my learner's permit, finally got my license in May 2011, and drove the truck for almost 2 years with the factory stereo before deciding enough was enough.

I initially had a Pioneer component speaker system and Pioneer single-DIN head unit, but then I decided I wanted a backup camera in 2016. This required a double-DIN head unit, and I got hit by a drunk driver in October 2015. I got some restitution money which I used to upgrade my stereo. The first double-DIN head unit I got was Sony, and it turned out to be a lemon. Crutchfield allowed me to exchange it for a Boss head unit that has GPS navigation.

I've considered getting a subwoofer, but I'd have to make my own enclosure, and my system actually sounds pretty damn good just with the 5-year old Pioneers...

Yeah the stock system sucked lol when I bought the truck it had a single din alpine which was awesome but I also wanted a back up cam so I got the double din with Bluetooth, dvd, 2 camera inputs, and appradio

Also my ac line leaks and it’s my fault because my light bar touches it and put a hole in it. That’s why I don’t use it.

Did you wire into the reverse light?

All 2nd Gen Tacomas 2009 and newer are prewired for backup cameras, even the base regular cabs. However, only the SR5 and higher access cabs and double cabs have them. My neighbor just wired my aftermarket Clarion backup camera into the factory reverse wire. My dad has a 2013 Honda Pilot Touring 4WD that he bought new for almost $40,000. Even my dad will admit that his factory backup camera is inferior to the one in my truck!

Owned a 2nd gen for the past 7 years. Knew it went up and down - never knew it telescoped.

    Hahaha made my day.

How many miles on yours? Do you have the original clutch?

I didn't know how to drive a stick when my dad got me the truck. Now I'm one of those rare Americans under the age of 30 who actually can drive stick! I found a brand new 2009 or 2010 RC 4x4 for sale back when we were shopping, and said I'd happily learn to drive stick if my dad bought it, but my dad thought driving stick would be too distracting for me. My dad bought me a brand new truck, so I didn't complain...

Most recently, my uncle let me drive his '71 VW Bus during a family trip to California this past October...

183k on it right now. I did a new clutch at 155k and there was probably another 15k left in the clutch if I was cautious
