The wife and I are looking at a 2016 double cab 4x4 with around 14k on it, I know there have been a lot of transmission threads but how much of this is subjective or complaining vs actual issues?

None have failed. Low transmission fluid and complaints of searching for the right gear were the biggest problems.

Take a long test drive, including at speed on decent grades, cruise on, and see how this specific truck behaves.

If you tow or haul loads, remember anything you find you don't like won't get better.

It's subjective for the most part.

I like the transmission (AT), myself. Sport mode and ECT work well together in the mountains and in town, although gas mileage suffers a little that way. If I'm feeling lazy and just leave it in "D" it can be a tiny bit sluggish, but then gas mileage ends up being really good.

ok so it seems to be mostly subjective, are there any other problems to look for?

    Subjective.

That being said, I'd have a hard time buying used because of the price... For only a little more, I could buy new. So, I bought new. Hope you are getting a good deal.
