A FREE REPAIR MANUAL FOR YOUR TRUCK https://charm.li/Toyota/2010/

    TRANSMISSION COOLERS
If you do not have a transmission cooler on your truck and you plan to tow or haul heavy loads, bigger tires , lift kits with trail gear or you are in heavy stop and go traffic and use 4X4 low a lot , consider purchasing a cooler . The cooler thats built into your rad is designed to cool the transmission with the weight of just the truck by itself .When you are in 4x4 low , your torque converter is usually in the stall stage and creates a tonne of additional heat .You dont have much air flow going through your rad when you are in low range 4x4 .

DO NOT ! use your transmission temperature dummy light as a reliable source . Toyota illuminates that light on the dash far too late and chances are your fluid is now very cooked . I beleive Toyota illuminates that idiot light close to 300 degrees on most Toyota vehicles

I will always point at the " True Cool" company for their fantastic line of transmission coolers . They are the original designers of Low Pressure Drop Technoligy and for this reason , many factory coolers are made by this company . I have used these guys for years and years in my transmission shop . The hardware and quality hose that come with the 4454 work perfect for our Tacoma,s . I do not suggest using the zip tie through the rad installation .Thats just asking for trouble as I have seen radiators leak where the zip ties are holding the cooler in place . If you ever need to service your radiator , the radiator techs will be happy they dont have to mess with a transmission cooler stuck to the rad .
Take the extra time to bolt the cooler in place using the metal brackets that are supplied in the kit .
Check out their website for more info
You cant overcool with these coolers which allows you to go overkill , but keep in mind ,a large transmission cooler will block off air flow to your rad .
I use a 4454 on light trucks and 4490 on full size
    http://trucool.com/

Whats wrong with other coolers ?
Do they offer winter protection ? I suggest looking into this before you purchase
If they do offer winter protection and you are getting a great deal ...Grab the cooler . If winter protection isnt an issue , grab whatever cooler you want as long as the specs dont list any restrictions to fluid flow

Got any questions ? send me a pm !!
Here is a 4454 as an example https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005XZXB1M
Here is an example of the 4490 https://www.amazon.com/Long-Tru-Coo...785&sr=1-1&keywords=transmission+cooler++4490

For the members with the tow package , you do have the option of removing the tiny factory aftercooler and installing a larger cooler in its place making this the best placement for an aftermarket cooler . There is no need for 2 aftercoolers if you can do the job with one aftercooler . Removing the factory aftercooler eliminates a bunch of extra fittings and hoses and lowers the leak factor if you were to leave it in place and add a second cooler .https://www.customtacos.com/tech.ol...6toyrm/06toypdf/06rmsrc/rm2006ta/02800810.pdf

Look at the True Cool web site GVW ratings for the cooler that makes most sense for what you plan to do with your truck.

Go to the true cool website and pick out the cooler that best suits your needs .
    https://www.trucool.com/

Are you planning to use 4x4 low often in warm areas of the world ?
This is probably your best bet !!!! There is no air flow through your rad while crawling
    cooler and fan install http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd...n-install.html

WHY DO WE NEED EXTRA COOLING ?

160 - 200 are considered normal temps providing your engine radiator is functioning properly . If your engine overheats , your transmission will also overheat
Normal fluid temperature in transmission to be 175 deg. F.

Rate of oxidation to double for each temperature increase of 20 deg F above normal (175 deg F). As oxidation rate doubles, useful life of fluid is cut in half.

At 175 deg F life is 100,000 miles
    At 195 deg F (20 deg above 175) life is 50k miles
At 215 life is 25k miles
    At 235 life is 12k
    At 255 life is 6,250
    At 275 life is 3,000
    At 295 life is 1500
    At 315 life is 750

At temperatures much above 300 deg F the metals in the transmission will tend to warp, twist etc. high temperatures causes the formation of varnish deposits which impair or pre vent transmission operation.

At a fluid temperature of 415 deg F fluid life is 30 minutes!

    HOW TO MONITOR TRANSMISSION TEMPS

Consider a scan gauge to keep an eye on your transmission temps [IMG]
    https://www.amazon.com/ScanGauge-Au...1618584546&sprefix=scan+guage+,aps,189&sr=8-2

Here is the best information for the scan gauge http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd...-pressure.html

Ultraguage is now offering transmission temps http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/318340-ultragauge-transmission-temp.html

You could also use the Torque app with an Android phone as a cheap alternative to watch your temps http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/per...d2-reader.html

A picture heavy write up showing a manual gauge install
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/trans-temp-sensor.456998/#post-13594000

Its preferred to run a digital gauge when you can . Less chances of leaking rather than tying into a cooling line or drilling a bung in the side of the transmission pan,
On some early Tacoma,s you dont have a choice . You guys all have transmission temp sensors inside the pan but it depends how the temp sensor communicates with the OBD2 connector under your dash

This is how Low Pressure Drop technology works
When Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is cold it is viscous. The unique Tru-Cool design allows the colder, thicker ATF to flow more efficiently through two open bypass channels positioned at the top of the cooler. As operating temperatures increase, the ATF becomes hotter and thinner, It's then directed through the core where it is cooled. Tru-Cool's highly efficient cooling technology combines improved protection against lube failure with optimal heat transfer.
    [IMG][IMG]http://www.amazon.com/Long-Tru-Cool-.../dp/B005XZXB1M

Long Tru-Cool Oil Coolers offer advanced cooling protection for many towing applications. The advanced technology out performs TUBE & FIN Designs, Delivers up to 15 times less flow restrictions, 30% more cooling delivers maximum heat transfer, Self-Regulating for maximum lube flow protection through start-up, varied temperatures and driving conditions, heavy loads and towing.
Here is Toyotas fluid flow guide ...Look at page 8 on this PDF http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/pdf/A750E.pdf

1 of our members builds coolers you can purchase
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/transmission-cooler-kit.699390/

FLUSH YOUR TRANSMISSION COOLING SYSTEM TO VERIFY FLOW.
The outside fins of the cooler need to be washed on a regular basis .

Not only does the outside of the cooler and rad plug up with mud and debris , but your cooler can plug up internally

. Use a flow meter to determine correct flow

Installing a new radiator or you need to make sure your cooler is clean ?

And here is a guy who recently installed a cooler correctly http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st...agram-pic.html

HERE is the Tacoma World Towing Bible https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-tacoma-towing-bible.4031/

    CAN YOU OVERCOOL ?

Yes . Transmissions are designed to operate at 170ish . There are demulsifiers ( chemicals to fight water ) in the fluid to assist with internal condensation but you still need the heat to bake that water off on occasion .
For guys in colder climates , change your fluid frequently .
You guys are going to use up your demulsifiers quicker than a guy that lives in Arizona .
If its 50 below zero and you think your fluid is jelled , let your engine warm up your transmission .
Grade 9 taught us that water boils at 100* C or 212*F
If installing a cooler , ask yourself what plans you have for the cooler during the winter months .
Where you live makes a crucial impact on transmission cooling . Members living in Alaska or Canada need to consider what to do during the winter when the temps go below negative 30 degrees .

When you first start your truck in the morning , the transmission uses the heat provided by the engine to warm the transmission .
This results in better fuel economy as well as improved transmission shifting . You will see your converter clutch lock up sooner as well as 4th and 5th gear sooner
With this said , I will always recommend using the factory in line radiator to warm the transmission up followed by placing the cooler after the original rad .
Some guys beleive they are overcooling during winter months . Easy fix - a chunk of cardboard goes a long way .

Bypassing the internal radiator cooler and going directly to an aftermarket cooler .
Would I do this ? NO . I want the engine radiator to warm the transmission first thing in the morning during start up . This is going to save me fuel
Some factors that you may bypass the factory radiator transmission cooler are listed below .
1- The strawberry Milkshake effect . Internal cooler is broken allowing anti-freeze to contaminate your transmission . NOT GOOD
2- A former transmission failure causing the internal rad cooler to plug with metal or aluminum . You beleive cooling flow is restricted .Its very difficult to get these unplugged . Consider a new rad

COOLERS FOR YOUR MANUAL TRANSMISSION ?
Yes there is such a thing . I have used a few over the years in high horsepower applications .
    Here is an example https://www.driftmotion.com/Driftmotion-Manual-Transmission-Oil-Cooler-Kit-p/dm3561.htm

    2005 - 2015 Tacoma with the 5 speed A750 series transmission

1985-2015 Toyota trucks with 4 speed automatic A340 series transmission

A HUGE COST SAVING FOR TOYOTA .
Apparently your brand new truck with the tow package no longer needs a transmission cooler o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O?????????? . READ BELOW

One thing I absolutely hate about the third generation design . You guys have a transmission fluid pre-heater that is mechanically controlled . The pre heater is designed to warm up the transmission quicker in the mornings on initial start up .
When the pre-heater is active , transmission fluid dumps out of the torque converter and reverts directly back to the transmission pan instead of flowing through the transmission cooler .
You guys are relying on 1 mechanical valve to always function properly . What would happen if that valve failed and you continued to drive your truck ?

2019 -2021 TACOMAS , Apparently you dont have a cooler in the front of the truck . To verify if you have a cooler or not , look at page 6 ....post 119

towing a light trailer with a vehicle not designed for towing, even an empty trailer causes the TCC to stay unlocked when driving on a slight incline. I have seen this happen more than once. The converter turns blue and the fluid turns clear. The customer brings the car in because the check trans light is on. $$$$$

The picture below shows a cooler with a fan . Horrible lol

I have had a B&M racing oil cooler installed on the truck for a long time now. It runs in series with the factory cooler. So Trans, Factory Cooler, B&M cooler, trans, and so on. Keeps things nice and cool...

It's just a good idea in general. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

I'm worried about keeping it cool with the setup I have planned.. I talked to a guy with my dream engine setup, he said he's around 400hp. I want to do that and have 37s.. Regeared with 5.29 gears

I finally got my trans temp gauge installed. On hot days, I’m seeing average temps in the city around 160-165. In a lot of stop and go in hot weather, I’ve seen it go to 175, but once moving again it dropped back to 165 very quickly. In this cold weather, I’m seeing top temps of 150-160. This is with the radiator cooler and an auxiliary cooler.

Starting over with a new GMC AT4 Satin Steel Metallic Softopper, Bilstein 5100's @ 1.75 in the front, TSB Rear, 17x8.5 Lvl 8 Guardians, 265/70-17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Scooped, Anytime fog mod, Osram Nightbreakers, LED Interior lights, Debadged, Painted valance, Removed rear head rests, De-flapped, Hidden Hitch installed, Weather Techs, Flyzeye'd A/W/A, Cover Kings.
Any recommendation on specific Tranny coolers? I'm going to be adding one soon and was curious what's being used out there. My truck does not have the factory tow package. I already installed the hitch, wiring and brake controller is coming along with the tranny cooler. We'll be towing a tent trailer in the 3k-4k range.

B&M Racing makes a very stout cooler. Got mine from Summit Racing.
