So I got off work this morning and got in my truck to warm it up. I released the parking brake and put it into gear. Truck would not move without considerable gas. Thought it might be the e brake. Tried releasing and applying it. Didn't help. Any thoughts?

Called a tow truck. I assume it's something more than the e brake. Tried cycling the 4wd. It won't go into 4wd

My guess is rear brakes froze. When you parked, were the brakes wet? Don't take much if it's cold outside. Let us know the outcome.

your drum brakes are frozen, I've read you can put it in drive the reverse then drive until it releases. Don't use your e brake in freezing temps

Not wet. Also, when the tow truck winched it on just the the back passenger tire would lock up. I tried forward and reverse to no avail. At dealership now.

Do you happen to live in the lower mainland? Keep us posted, this happened to me yesterday. Could go in reverse but that was about it. Eventually it drove.

Alabama. one time when I was offroad with some of the guys from the Alabama thread the same wheel locked up on me. they were yelling that I was still locked but I had already taken it out. this and the fact that I was eating at my tires I figured id just take it to the dealer. still under the 36k warranty. should find something out in a couple of hours.

Sounds like frozen drums--I've been trying to get into a habit of not using my ebrake due to freezing temps and not wanting to deal with this issue.

I've NEVER had an issue with the park brake freezing, but I live in a COLD climate....it stays cold till spring... AND I always set the park brake when I put it in Park. (keeps my drum pads adjusted also)..

You guys in an "off n on" climate where you are wet today froze tomorrow, this issue might happen...!!

Pretty bad if you gotta tow it for that.... I'd think I'd try to find some dry pavement and run her forward/reverse a few times..

Good luck... let us know what the issue is...!

16 degrees in my area this morning . I parked my truck Friday with the ebrake on . This morning it was frozen . I worked it free and drove 32 miles to work and when I got there the screw compressor was frozen (line coming out ) so I hopped back in and went for some diesel for a heater an hour later and whoops engaged the parking brake ..Yep frozen lol.
They free up pretty quick though. Ebrake not set tonight.

So weird how this seems to affect so many and also none at all. Thankfully I have had no issues after washing it or letting it sit extended periods in high and low temps.

Same here, but this and other threads have changed my habits on using the parking brake. For now anyways.

I have been driving 35 years and never once have I had a handbrake freeze, we had a terrible ice storm about 10 years ago where it took me 3 days to get a door open on my 1st Gen Taco and the tires were frozen solid to the ground! Maybe it is a bad design in these 3rd Gens but now I am also starting to reconsider not using it.

I had it happen one time on my current rig. Popped loose after a couple forward to reverse cycles. Drove 20 miles in slushy conditions only to park it outside as temps dropped well below freezing.

Never on my other 2 Tacos

I think it was a combination of wet + flash rust + frozen components. Kind of a perfect storm

Had it happen a few times with my 2nd gen. A few times offroad too, dust, sand etc gets in the drums and jams the parking braje mechanism.

Nope. No rain for a week and I did not wash it . 16 degree weather will do it with an hr to sit though I'll never use the ebrake again if its below freezing. Kind of eager to see what happens tomorrow.

Kind of feels like I'm making an ice road trucker run.
I'm gonna pull the drums and grease up (very lightly)a couple things .
