No BS. I used to have a Viper 488 cu in 450 hp. Factory installed smooth flow air tubes and k&N filters gave you 460 at the crank.(factory option numbers) Going whole hog. High lift roller rockers, high flow cats, headers,Straight pipes, tune I ended up with 510HP and 560 tq. What made the biggest difference? The cheapest mod. An ecu tuned for off road use only. No sniff test in NYS. Easy to swap out for a stock ecu. On a chassis dyno the car ran up the dyno 2500 to 6000 1 second faster with the ecu tune. It needed 93 octane gas. So the best inexpensive option for more power and drive ability is an ecu tune. However if you are going to spend big bucks as in Forced induction either some type of supercharger or turbo you can't beat it. NA will not beat FI. Guys ran pro charger type but the biggest gains were twin turbo. How about 1500 HP? Problem is you need a built motor, fuel system, cooling system, transmission, clutch, drive shaft, rear end, half shafts......$$$$. Best bang for the buck is an ecu programed and labeled off road only(yeah sure). OV tune are you listening? Mod a sent in ecu on exchange, have an off road tune program.Have a down loadable off road use ecu tune for 91 octane.

wtf. have you even read all the OV threads and the endless pages of user feedback? are you preaching to the choir? yes. you are.

FYI, when Mat was developing the final MT 1.03 tune recently i became one of the testers since I've been with it since early alpha. the last test tune i had was for off road use... not so good or safe for on road use. that tune was aggressive especially with the throttle mapping... Mat said it was the "full no holdback version".

would you like that tune? no, you wouldn't. would it satisfy your power craving? no. the motor is NA and small, and there's no FI yet.

if FI ever shows on this motor believe me everyone around here will be the first to know.

do you own a Tacoma yet?

Own a gen 2 waiting on a gen 3,an acura mdx and a ferrari. Just saying bolt ons on a small motor aren't worth it. Best bet is a tune or forced induction when you absolutely have to have more power. Yep I drive like the throttle is an off on switch. That off road tune should be an option for some.

I just want a better sound, and better economy. That's why I would like a Cat-back and CAI. You definitely can get 3-5 HP increase from bolt-on's though. I feel that is just an added bonus.

Do the math. $/hp, $/mpg. Both of which are minuscule on a stock motor.

If they were worthy, they'd come that way from Toyota, because every OE is digging for all the HP, MPG and low emissions they can score.

So, what you are buying is $/sound, which is fine if you think that is valuable.

I too am a sucker for sounds good. Can't stand sounding like a buick. Gen 2 has a gibson cat back that has become louder over time. F car has straight pipes after cats. Great deep music from a v12. Loud? WHAT! Rear exhaust not intrusive with the windows up. Does make the house vibrate when running in the garage.

I love it on a sports or muscle car.

Unless you've chosen to build a sleeper. ;)

On a stock Tacoma sounding powerfuIl is a fantasy.

I have a couple 12s inside the house that rattle the hvac and every wall in the house and garage.
    Thats not very impressive.

OP, that is a weird post. But I kinda like it.

OV Tune is making the little 3.5 run well. They have yet to figure out how to increase displacement with an ECU tune though, or to force induction.

WRT exhaust, I personally like quiet. Quieter is better to me. However, Toyota tends to leave a lot of HP and TQ jammed in the exhaust.

URD full exhaust and OV ECU tuning to maximize power and clear codes could unplug a good amount of the potential of the NA 2GR engine in the Taco.

Add in FI - preferably twin small turbos - and this combo would be amazing. Probably require a clutch upgrade for us MT guys though.

    P.S.

IMHO - the A/Ts need 4:88 to run OE size tires, the M/Ts have the right axle gears, but 6th gear is too short. F/I on an auto will rock, on an M/T, taller tires or an eventual fix for 6th will be necessary

This is what I have. It can be a bit ricey at times, but that's very much the motor's fault; not the exhaust.

Trust me when I say my Taco sounds much more "powerful" that the stock ones I see around here. Compliments everywhere I go. People always ask me if I have a "special" model.

    Just an SR5, dude!

Not sure how I feel about ecu tunes.

Does this decrease reliability long-term in the truck? Seems like the engineers do it all to maintain reliability... be interesting if someone has ran one with 300k+ miles and no incidents.

I'll second the exhaust. I used to like it a little loud, now I just want a quiet truck.

I can't figure out what they were doing with this stock ECU tune. One would think reliability and efficiency, but given on stock, my truck was always bogging down, slamming into gears (jerking when doing so at too high RPMs) and overall just ran roughly and never got more than a combined 18mpgs... I can't see the stock tune achieved either of these. On OVTune, my truck is always very smooth, very little vibes, and even gear changes are much smoother... and because I too want to watch out for any hints of reliability problems I regularly monitor things like my lamda, AFRs, coolant temps, cat temps, etc., to ensure nothing looks out of the ordinary.

I agree, personally i can only imagine the Ov tune will prolong the life as it seems the stock truck is very rough in comparison

I laughed out loud at this.

My question is this: What does a high performance car like that have to do with a 3rd gen Tacoma? Two different vehicles for widely different uses.
