Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

I would take 16mpg any day. Im only getting 12-13 mpg highway on my stock tune. When I get my ovtune flash i dont believe that number will get better.

 

My daily driving is about 50-50 but here in LA, that to% hwy is worst than service street but i have been averaging in the high 18s to low 19s. Mine is sport 2wd though.

 

I cant wait to get the tune, wow does this truck suck at shifting and not to mention the dead pedal feeling. Had a 2 hour drive and i had to fight the truck the whole drive just to consitantly keep a constant speed. Toyota is getting lazy or what. I actually prefer driving my soccer mom nissan pathfinder just because it drives normal

Woke up at 0410 today and couldn't get back to sleep.

Decided to come on here and check things out. Four hours and ten minutes later I had breakfast.

Went for a drive on hwy 410, pondered the futility of it all.. then headed back for some gas. 41 liters to fill up.

Can't shake this feeling like I've forgotten something..

While I have been very happy with the OVtune (1.02C 87) throttle response and somewhat improved shifting, for those of you who are hoping the AT transmission hunting can be completely cured with a tune, I think you will be disappointed. Toyota screwed 3rd Gen Tacoma owners from the outset and OVtune can make it better for sure, but the intrinsic problem is a poor eng/trans combo (essentially a "hardware" issue).

Both the Tacoma and Hilux use the AC60F. The difference is that the Hilux comes with diesel engines all over the rest of the world, which have an abundance of low-end torque and can actually use the double over-drives in the A60F without having to dance around the gearbox every time you want moderate acceleration. The Tacoma does NOT have an abundance of low end torque and must hunt for it...it's that simple.

The Hilux 2.8 TDI makes 332 ft\lb of torque AND 273 ft\lb of torque is available at just 1200 rpm.
The Tacoma 2GR-FKS engine makes a peak of 265 ft\lb of torque...at 4600 rpm. I shudder to think what it makes at even 2000 rpm (much less 1200 rpm) compared to the Hilux.

We (AT owners) basically got screwed by the bean counters because they used a bad engine/transmission combo, I assume for economies of scale. There is nothing inherently wrong with either the engine or the transmission, they just aren't paired well together.

It seems the AC60F was designed with a TDI engine in mind and they just decided to try and make with work with a mid-displacement NA gas engine and that was a bad idea. This Tacoma eng/trans pairing is so obviously bad to anyone that drives one, it makes me wonder if they had originally planned to sell diesels here for the 3rd gens, but then changed their minds...?

If the Tacoma driving experience only moderately bothers you the OVtune may be enough to make you happy. The best bet for happiness for those like me (I'm more than moderately bothered) is probably an OVtune paired with a re-gear. After OVtune 1.03 is released I'm going to run that for awhile to see how much better it is, but I think I'm going to have to regear, buy a M/T or just live with this shitty eng/trans combo (greatly improved as it is with the OVtune) until one of the updated competitors (Ranger/Frontier) is released in the next year or so. You can call me impressed with with the OVtune improvements, but still underwhelmed with the trucks eng/trans performance. It's a shame...cause I like so much about this truck, but I shouldn't have to spend nearly $3k (OVtune & regear) for it to operate like it should.

Thanks for your input on this. Are you suggesting a regear first over the tune? Now that I think about it I am just going to regear and get the tune later.

If you have a completely stock truck, tune first. If you have bigger tires and/or armor and/or tow alot, do them both ASAP, but probably re-gear first IMO.

 

Nope, I got 33's KO2 tires and about 700lbs of added weight. Armor, bed rack, rtt, roof rack, recovery gear. Yes, I agree regear first then tune.

Is the tune really that noticeable? I already bought it but thinking of returning it when I receive it so I can pay for regearing.

For throttle response yes, it's VERY noticeable and the transmission shifting is improved...and remember, I haven't run the 91 tune....I can only assume that would be even better (especially with your weight), but for your situation I would re-gear first if I had to make a choice....but I think you will still want the tune ultimately as well.

 

Thank you for the info. Real helpful for those who thought the tune was going to be a magical fix. I want to be able to utilize 6th gear on a hill on the highway. Looks like the only way to really achieve that is regearing. I have decided on 4.88 gears. Probably do the ECGS bearing at the same time.

 

Agree 6th on a hill would be sweet. I also pull a TT and with the tune i can't really feel a difference between pulling tuned vs stock. Granted I have the neglected 04B10 ECU so my tune is just a "test tune".
