Dealer cost is insane on glass, we use a local repair shop on our lot vehicles and recommend them to customers.

They have two options on glass the higher quality of the two is the same manufacture Toyota uses just doesn't have the sticker on it

I had to replace the front windshield on my previous 2004 Tacoma and the glass guy used a windshield made by FUYAO. I was surprised how good quality it was.....no waves in glass, very clear, fair price (Under $300 installed I believe) and held up well until I sold the truck......just my 2 cents

I recently had a windshield replaced on my Frontier that I eventually traded for my Tacoma (rock cracked it across the whole glass on the way to look at another vehicle, figures) and I used a mom and pop company instead of Safelite to replace it. The guys called me back outside halfway through the job to have me look at the recession around where the windshield was after it was removed. There was clearly a substantial amount of that bubbling of rust under the paint that would inevitably lead to a leak. He asked if I replaced it b4. I said no, but I'm also the 3rd owner of the vehicle, so who knows what was replaced. He then explained to me that it is common practice and a tall tell sign that Safelite skips the priming process of where they cut the old stripping off with a razor and it eventually creates rust from where the blade cuts the paint.
So in this retrospect, if his statements were true, then it's plausible that could've been the case with your wife's as well.

Safelife replaced one on my 2004. There was a small wave up in the passenger top corner. Very hard to see but when the manager finally saw it, they replaced it no problem.

Safelite can suck a butt. Their “same day service” advertisement is hit or miss. Rock from some shithead dump truck driver dumping his whole payload on the highway cracked my glass. Safelite couldn’t make me an appt until 6 days later. Not only in one location but tried a few others, same story.

My dad has had the similar problems with them too. They canceled his same-day appt last minute, next morning his glass had then fully cracked.

Went to a local place with good rep within the hour for $30 and done. I’ll never resort to Safelite even though it’s who my insurance contracts with. I’d rather go through the reimbursement process to use someone else.

I used a local place last year... but they didn’t mention that they contract out there work (they used to be a family owned and trusted business but I guess the family got too old to do the work themselves). I had my truck parked at school and gave them my spot number as well as a description of my truck (silver Toyota Tacoma lifted on black wheels with a crack HALFWAY ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD... you couldn’t miss it)

I got a text from my buddy in a class with a window that looks over the parking lot and he told me that they were replacing the wrong windshield. The office lady called me and the other kid (that owned the “wrong truck”) and we went out and saw that the guys already removed the seal from his window. Now here’s the kickers... He has a stock RED PRERUNNER that looked almost lowered (the ones that are lower than a normal stock taco but they’re still stock) ANDDD he has just gotten his windshield replaced that week so it was in perfect condition, no crack. The company continued to call us and ask to reschedule and obviously I didn’t.

I later went with Safelite and left my truck at my dads dental office so I knew there wouldn’t be another mixup.

Also... here’s a little side note, my friend that warned me about the mix-up via text, he got a lunch detention for texting in class because he had a terrible teacher that block. I think he eventually got out of the detention after lots of arguing which made no sense to anyone (they had to call his parents).

Had Safelite replace the windshield on my previous Taco (because I did not repair the chip in time) and repair a chip in my current Taco......... I was happy with their service both times. There will never be a guarantee the chip won't spread, but at least they offer to knock off what you paid (in your case nothing) for the chip repair should the windshield need replacing. If I recall correctly, I did not have an option to go with anything other than OEM when I had mine replaced, but that was like 6-7 years ago....

I do realize how bad it sucks to chip/break windshield and can relate to your saltiness.

    Good luck with your repair.

People need to stop bragging about free glass, there's nothing free about your free glass. The cost is pretty much buried in the premium

Since Florida requires insurance to pay 100%, if i get a chip, i tap it with a hammer to cause the chip to crack then take it to the dealer for an OEM windshield.

My state was smart enough not to require insurance companies to pay for replacement glass. I prefer OEM glass. There's a lot of junk floating around for aftermarket glass

That’s crazy. So in essence, you could throw a rock thru your windshield once or twice a month, not a dime out of your pocket. What a great country! :oldglory:

Coatings do impact the ability of the adhesive to stick to the glass. Especially when you are talking permanent coatings like Aquapel, Diamon, Opti-glass. In fact if you look through the paperwork from glass/chip repair you should find a disclaimer.

I don't put coatings on people's windshields for that reason. If they want it they need to do it themselves or hire a different detailer.

OP - There was a chip - you called the insurance and they said bring it to Safelite. You did and they fixed it on their dime. No you have a crack. Now Call the ins company and tell them you need the windshield replaced do to a crack. Let them handle it.
