I need a replacement handle for my shovel. Can anyone recommend a plastic, fiberglass or space age material that will stand up to UV and weather better than wood? Nothing beats wood when new, but, i need something i can leave on the truck for 4 years without fear of rot or slivers.

    EDIT: D-grip is preferred.

I don't have a suggestion for material/brands but my dad said if I Armor All'd the handles on my axe and shovel (and now boxes) once a month they'd last a long time. Might be a pain, but I guess with everything else I ought to be inspecting monthly it's not a huge deal to give things a quick wipe. So I guess we'll see how well this works!

Wonder if plastidip would work for protecting the wood?

These are both good ideas. I think armorall now (now being like 2 decades ago) added a uv protectant so that is a good idea. And plasti dip is pretty good too. I DO put a coat of linseed oil on all tools once a year and/or spar oil. That helps.

    I ordered this: http://www.seymourmidwest.com/en/66776
Because someone said he puts them on everything because they last forever. I doubt anything under $20 is going to last more than a season, we will see. Still happy to hear of better products in the years to come.

In our machine shop, Fiberglas handles don't hold up - shoveling steel chips - so we replace them. Usually with heavy wall aluminum tubing.

Try painting the exposed wood with Rustolium type paint. My shovel is holding up fine, put 4 heavy coats on, even got it to seep into the handle and shovel head.

Made mine out of steel. Doesn’t weigh much more than a full wood handle, at least not to me. It rode outside on my tire carrier for close to two years before I made a new mount inside my shell. I built it to Oregon Forestry minimum length, and I find it to be the perfect size for general use.
