I'd be trying some ant patterns there!

Small set up for these small streams to start, a bigger set up for bigger water or lake water later. It’s been a long time since I’ve been fishing. Funny how work gets in the way. Now I’m retired & it’s me time. Both those stream shots I spotted 3/4” fry but nothing else. Have to be there. I’m in scouting mode for now.

If that's the case, I'm back to a 3 Weight.

Not many “kits” in 3 wt. I may wonder over to Bass pro to look around again. I got a gift card burning a hole in my pocket ;)

Bingo. Thats 7'6" 3w water all day long for me. Over line the reel with 4w line and youll be able to throw anything (reasonable) you want. Itll give you that little extra umf you need to throw heavy shit. I use the set up I described and can throw #8 slumpbusters no problem but can still drop little tiny dries right where I want them. Its the perfect mix of power and precision on a shorter rod.

I'd focus on a decent rod. Don't worry about a reel as you will rarely need to use the reel for a fish on water like that. Get something cheap as it'll just be holding the line.

A reel on a rod like that is nothing more than something to hold line.

Spend the majority of your money on the rod and go easy on the reel and line.

I like click pawl style reels on my small rods but its mostly for looks. No need for a fancy sealed drag for 8" trout. If you can find a Cabelas CRG reel, theyre super nice for the price. I use mine 90% of the time. You can find a nice used LL Bean streamlight reels for super cheap. I own 3 of them because I like em so much for the price.

Same goes for line. Cheapy WF or DT floating line is all you need. Cortland 444 is hard to beat, and you can find it for 30ish$ from time to time. SA Air Cell or Cortland 333 is another good cheap option. You wont get pissed when you destroy in a year and have to replace it.

This is the water I grew up with fishing with my dad. Lost him in 1968 to cancer. This is the water I want to fish for the most part.

Well, I pulled the trigger today. Go big or go home.
5 wt inc Rio line, reel & case. Also ordered a shorter 4 wt Sage pole & spare reel (non stock). I’m a broke old man now! That’s what happens when I get my friend in Colorado on phone while shopping. Planning a trip there soon so I’m covered.IMG_4041.jpg

It’s a bit long at 9ft. My friend said if I can’t cast that on that puny water I posted, he’s taking my man card away. I ordered the 7 ft pole but didn’t give any money yet. If I change my mind, they will just stock it. Funny, they don’t even have the Sage poles on floor. All in back & very expensive. I kept throwing brand names at my friend, he said Sage- buy once, cry once. Can’t beat their warranty. Above I said extra reel. I meant extra spool.

They are nice for sure. I just can’t justify that cost. Congrats though, and get out and fish it.

I fish the 5wt St. Croix Legend Elite for 4-5 years now and it has steadily been falling on their 5wt shootout, mostly because they say it's swing weight is heavy but I think it's just an older rod and they are trying to "pump" the new rods but... My two buddies fish the 5wt Douglas DFX and it is sweet. So there is something to be said about newer rods.
