 Curious to see if you have a ton of metal shavings when you change the oil next. I would assume so if your tcase is making that much noise.

I have had grinding come from my case before, but it turned out to be the actuator making that noise when trying to go into 4LO. It clunks fairly often when engaging 4HI

It’s snowing like crazy here today so no new oil for me but I will keep you guys updated, I’ll probably just buy some SuperTech till I get all this figured out. Thanks for all the replies, this site has never let me down :D

Milage difference on the tires. Get a tire depth guage n measure them. Running missmatched tires causes major transfer case issues n faster you go the greater change of gernating the tcases. I have done that in my old k20.

It is nothing like shifting a bicycle. The chain in the t case does not move from a smaller gear to a larger one or vise versa like a bicycle. That part is done with gears.

So as of today, at 35 degrees outside, my transfer case shifts beautifully, even under slight acceleration.

mine does to. Im broke so i have been dealing with it. If i treat it like 4 lo no problems. 2h then put the truck in neutral shift to 4h and no noise. I know this is not right and when i can i will get it fixed. now i want to know how bad my problem is but i bet we are getting the same noise. only when really cold and mine does it when im coasting under 5mph no foot on the gas pedal at all

The only other thing I can think of is as the oil gets cold it contracts and drops below where it needs to be, I need to check and make sure I have enough oil in it soon. If you find anything out please let me know and I’ll be sure to pass on anything I find to you!

My truck is actually in the shop right now they were done with it and I was supposed to pick it up so if they can squeeze it in and check the oil I will keep you in the loop

My mechanic just called me after checking the transfer case oil no metal shavings at all per him it looks perfect and this is a family friend not just a random mechanic. I'm at a complete loss still because I can't replicate this unless we are talking single digits cold and where I live it's not that cold right now

So guys what else could it be what else effects the 4 wheel drive system when it's cold. The noise will not be replicated unless it's single digits cold anything besides that it acts like normal if I lived somewhere hot I would never know there was even a problem

After watching that video, it would make sense that the cold oil is causing a slower shift. The front and rear axles must be a little off sync and the slow shift may be causing the synchronizer to slip and grind.

That one has me puzzled. Initial thought was tire size. But warner temps should result same outcome.are u running synthetic oils? Colder temps synthetic runs better.

Wonder if the solenoid is slowly activating because of the cold. I would next check the actuator linkage, check for binding.
