Electric motors have a lot to bring to the table. Unfortunately it’s met with resistance in communities like this because electric is seen as eco nerds or environmentalists. Electric technologies bring predictable and gobs of torque instantly. Look at the latest crop of super cars, they all use hybrid technology for power advantages. WEC also, the top cars in the LMP1 are hybrids. Hybrid is just an evolution in the design. Toyota has been the most successful with it and have proven reliability in the real world. They could very easily make a very good Tacoma hybrid that dominates off road.

I can't imagine how it wouldn't. In order to start a ICE you have to add additional fuel vapor and send the ignition pulse. Even if it doesn't create additional carbon fouling, you're doing hell to that starter. Can't be good for your electrical system. My gut says its probably not great for the internals either.

Key words are "pull it off correctly". I got stuck in a RAV4 hybrid while the diff recallapocalypse was in full swing. Low end torque was impressive, but passing power was nonexistent. The ICE had to rev and strain to pull off highway passing and the mileage was unimpressive. (29 combined)

A 2.0 liter Tacoma Hybrid would be a very sad state of affairs.

Absolutely--NEMA class D torque motors can produce 250% or more of their full speed torque--at stall (0 rpm). Used 'em all the time in industrial winding and tensioning applications. The problem with all electric vehicles is not the motor but rather the inefficiency of the power source--maybe someday when the Dr. Fusion device become available and affordable it will work,

To me hybrids make a lot more sense than all-electric--they have been "working on the railroad" for 100 years this year...

I'm thinking that, performance wise, all electric would be fantastic off road. Tons of torque at any rpm and separate motor for each wheel. A gas powered rig couldn't touch it.

I wonder if Toyota will jack up the electric motor/transmission on it too...

Your argument is missing key components such as regenerative braking of electric vehicles. I'm not sure I understand where the animosity against electric vehicles come from. I don't care what powers my vehicle. If there's a superior option available, I'll give it a look. An electric Tacoma is probably a ways off, but I'll happily take something with that much on demand torque. Also being able to charge my truck with solar panels on the roof of my house is a very appealing concept. I love my Tacoma, but even my 4 cylinder stick gets garbage gas mileage. That's not to say I won't miss rowing my own gears with the manual. But at this rate, I likely won't be making that change until at least 10 years from now anyways. Still, it's an exciting future to look forward to :)

All-electric; not interested, but plug-in hybrid; I could go for that.

The additional load on the Power Grid is a serious problem, as it is right now during a cold snap or heat wave they put out alerts on electricity usage let alone adding plugging millions of cars in.

I would guess 110 years ago there was a lot of discussion about how the ICE would never replace the horse, including lots of convincing arguments to back up the assertion....lol

if this was true, it doesn't surprise me in the least

michigan has more test centers built than anywhere, so I would assume toyota or the epa would run tests in michigan
since all the facilities and knowledge are there.

I also talk straight out my ass.

How much efficiency is lost in power transmission (long distance high voltage power line loose up to 50% of the power put into them, you can hear it) and charging/discharging and self discharge of the batteries? 20%?
Don't forget the monetary and environmental cost of making batteries and disposing of them either.

The proposal I saw for WA bigger vehicles such as out trucks would pay less while small high mileage cars and hybrids and electrics would pay more :)
Of course it's the government so everyone will probably pay more :(

    Whoa! I didn't see that.

I only know that from the volunteer group, they called it a roaring success. Of course! Just like the failed express toll lanes.

Hybrids use the generator to start the engine. A regular starter only has a few thousand starts in it, so it wouldn't last. UPS truck drivers turn off their engine every time they stop. I asked a driver about the starters, he said they use special heavy duty starters.
