Hi, I have a 2017 tacoma offroad 500 miles on it and i think I'm hearing a growl or whirring noise from the rear drivetrain. It sounds similar to tire noise, but not quite.

I saw some 3rd gens came from factory with low grease. Should I get it checked out?

Wouldn’t hurt to go in and report the problem. Some did come with low fluids so they may be the case but there is also other reports of other components causing a “howling” noise at highway speeds due to the position of certain parts. If you got warranty, use it right?

    Alright cool, thanks guys!

Is there anything else I should have them check while I'm there? Are there any other problems 3rd gens have had from factory?

They discontinued greasable u-joints on the rear driveshaft June/July of 2016.

There r different issues that people r experiencing. Search around a bit and u will c stuff here and there. I had a “non recall” differential leak. Fixed, but truck was gone for a month. Hope u don’t have to deal with that crap.

I get a similar noise and it changes depending on how new the concrete is. I think it is tire noise. I have a SR5 loaner right now while my truck is getting checked and it makes a similar noise, but a little less since the tires are not as aggressive as the ones on my off road. Friend's GF has a Jeep with mud tires, holy crap the road noise in that thing....

Yep at least half of these trucks have a poorly installed or poorly manufactured rear end
