What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

You guys are overthinking it. A longer spring is coiled differently to ensure it stays at 600lbs for every inch of travel. You would be correct if they used the same materials, winding, etc. But they make sure a 600lb spring compresses 1" for every 600lbs, that is why its a 600lb spring

 

Again no its not, the way the spring is designed its a constant rate spring. There are also progressive rate springs that do what you are speaking of, but almost all off road springs are constant rate for this exact reason

 

This has more to do with the lever ratio of the suspension I think, it is near 3:1 or something but I get what you're saying

 

I am not trying to challenge here, just curious. But its my understanding that king coils are not progressive rate coils..Then why would my results change so drastically with the same "pre-load" adjustment as the first attempt?

I suppose suspension geometry and the way it distributes the weight over the front end components plays a role in this..but i dont really know.

So for the lifting aspect if you keep spring rate and preload constant then a 13/14" spring will act the same. For ride quality is there going to be a practical difference or just a theoretical one? And if there is a change can you just valve the shocks appropriately to compensate?

I know there is potentially a complicated answer to this I was just curious about a general one

If the longer spring is "preloaded" to the same length then yes it would have 500lbs more preload, and the extra stored 500lbs would result in a higher ride height

So using those numbers and the 500lb spring, lets say your truck puts 2000lbs total at rest or ride height. If you "store" 1000lbs of preload on the shock the weight of the truck will compress another 2 inches, or 2000lbs total. If you "store" 1500lbs of preload on the shock then the truck weight will only compress another 1 inch, still at 2000lbs total but now sitting 1" higher due to preload. Doesnt matter how long the spring is, overall length of the spring will be 4" shorter total with 2000lbs on it

 

TEKE, Crack in valve cover at front--Loosen & take out the bolt, remove broken piece, put JB Weld in the Crack between on Both pieces -Gently squeeze pieces together ,reinstall bolt & finger tighten- let set for 24 hrs & gently tighten with socket. Hope this helps out.

 

Also its been said before but generally spring rate and preload controls ride height and thats all. Valving controls dampening and unless your spring rate is waaaay off then changing spring rates/preload to achieve ride quality is the wrong way to do it

 

Someone on Facebook said they might have one for me so we will see what he wants. There is one on Ebay for $80 so if its less than that I'd be happy. I think I can get away with mine until the spring, or at least I'm hoping so. Two cars and a motorcycle are in the garage for the winter so space to work on my truck at the moment.

 

I've known for a long time that there was something not quite right: on Friday I made an appointment with the Dealer to have the Diagnostic Service done to find out what was wrong - there had been no idiot light at that point. Friday night on the way home that light came on.

I am not too happy with the result (or the price, but I knew the price going in). (Here I am assuming you can read from the photo - you asked for photos; if not, the answer was, "you do have a problem, we don't know what it is, try a fuel additive".

Do any of you have any thoughts re: the Lucas or Tehran products? I have driven it over the mountains and back, so a carbon deposit issue seems funny.
