Agreed, my daughter evacuated and came here, for the ac I think. We had a camp out in the living room with mattresses on the floor, all other doors closed, so the ac could handle it, and it did great. Had daughter, her fiancee, granddaughter, 2 cats, and a dog, but we were comfortable, better than most in the area.

In an emergency is solar not a better option?

While an ok option, or maybe part of a 'package' of things, having enough solar collection battery storage capacity, switching gear, etc. to support an equivalent output can be space and cost prohibitive.

Better option, switch over to 100% solar and have a petrol backup....for emergencies.

To be honest diesel is really the only way to go. My co-worker bought a never used 2005 Kubota 11kw when Irma came by this year and that bitch fired right up. For us folks down here in hurricane alley diesel is a lot easier to get and efficient when shit hits the fan. My next truck may be diesel too.

So my area got a hit with several "noreasters" a few weeks back.

The rain and snow meant that our basement sump pump was running regularly. I was on my way home from work during a good snow storm, and my wife called to say our power had just gone out.

I knew we couldn't let the sump pump go too long, so as soon as I got home, I pulled the eu2000 out of storage, put some gas in and fired it up (second pull - priceless) and connected the sump pump.

We found out that a transformer in our neighborhood went down, and it was going to take awhile before we would have power back.

I hooked up the generator to a filled 5 gallon gas can via rubber tube/ extended run fuel cap, and connected our gas furnace, chest freezer, internet router and a tv.

We were without power about 48 hours, and the generator ran continuously during that time, kept the house warm, basement dry, family entertained- everybody happy.

Burned about 6 gallons of fuel the entire run.

Very happy with that generator, fwiw.

I'm definitely getting one of those! Like soon (as soon as sale prices will be in effect, lol).
I'll have to figure out how would I connect my furnace (gas forced hot air system ) to the generator, and if 20 Amp generator would be enough to run it.

I have a boiler/ furnace and had a electrician install a single electric box at the furnace, so alls I do is un plug the furnace from the house wiring and plug in an extension cord to the Honda generator. Works like a charm. He only charged me $65.00 plus the cost of the outlet box.

You should be able to look on the furnace electric tag and it will tell you how many amps in needs.

I would figure how many amps for the heat, and whatever else is needed in an emergency.

    This site might be helpful:

    https://powerequipment.honda.com/generators/selector

I am running hot water baseboard, and the little taco circulation pump only draws about 1 amp.

Our hot water heater runs on natural gas.

The sump pump draws the most, every time it went off, the generator kicked on full blast.

Some of my friends have bigger generators, but need to keep a lot more fuel on hand to power them. During Sandy, all the local gas stations were closed, but my old truck had a 21 gallon tank and I was able to siphon all the fuel I needed- don't think the Tacoma would be that easy, but I purchased a bunch of 5 gallon cans, and the 2k Honda doesn't use much.

Surprised how many neighbors still don't have generators. The nighttime temps were in the 20's and a few people told me their inside temps dropped to the 40's- a few more days of that and it's time to shut off and drain the water main and baseboard heat.

Nice to see they added the oil drain extension and fuel cutoff option. I don't use mine enough to upgrade, but wouldn't hesitate to get either one.

Hopefully you guys can give me some recommendations. I am wanting to purchase a Honda Generator and I am torn between the EU2200i, EU3000is, or the 3000iHandi. I honestly cannot tell a differenvve between the 3000is and the Handi. I will mainly use this as a backup for my home. I have a large fish tank (240 Gallons) and the last thing i want to happen is lose all my fish due to the power being out. If the power does go out, I would probably only be powering a few accessories just to keep the fish tank running (filters, air pump, and heaters). If possible, would like to try to run other components like my refrigerator if needed, and maybe the television if i can draw off enough power. It definitely sounds like a lot and not sure if the 2200i could handle all of this. That is the reason I am looking at the 3000is or Handi due to the additional wattage. Which one would you recommend for this? Any help is appreciated.

The first thing I did was add up the amps from all the appliances I wanted to run. Then I bumped that up about 15% . I think I used the Honda website and they have a page that shows about what amps each appliance needs.

Keep in mind you don’t have to run a refrigerator the whole time you power is out. Run it just enough to keep the food from spoiling and then run something else if you need to.

My plan was to run the tank for as long as needed and then switch out to the fridge if necessary. The fish can live for some time without power so can be running the fridge in spurts if need be.

I’ll do some research on all my devices to make sure I have enough.

Also, you want the proper gauge extension cords, some of those cheap orange ext.cords could be dangerous. I think if I remember right you need a 14 gauge cord. But check it out to be sure. Mine cost about $35 for 50’.
