Restoring trim

Washed, clay barred, and waxed my truck the other day. Noticed afterwards the trim didn’t look as nice and shiny black as when I got it from the dealer. I imagine they used a temporary trim restore product to make it look appealing before they sold it.

What’s your guys experience with restoring trim. Trim and bumped paint? Or are there long lasting trim restore proudcts out there?

You can try using a heatgun or blow dryer to heat up the trim and it should restore it. Also look up aerospace 303, it works good on black trim/seals. The white on there now is from wax drying on the trim.

 

The white stuff on the plastic is wax, you should be able to clean that off with some rubbing alcohol and I usually use a meguiars trim restorer.

 

I say get some @KB Voodoo Bedside Rails Caps, then you won't have to worry about getting wax on the plastic.

 

Sorry, but that stuff's just awful. And it doesn't last past the first rain storm either. Besides, the OP's problem is wax / polish imbedded in the black textured trim, not UV fading from the sun.

 

I use Back to Black after wax (looks just like OP's) and it makes it look brand new. I don't know..

Buy these erasers on Amazon. They will get the white wax residue off the black trim.

 

I agree the white stuff is dried wax on the plastic.

As far as the Mother’s Back to Black, I find it works better if I apply it thick with a foam paint brush, let it sit for about 5 minutes, and then wipe off the excess. It seems to absorb into the plastic.

 

I've tried a lot of those things and they make the plastic look better but won't do anything to get rid of the wax stains.

 

I've had good and long lasting results with Wipe New. You can find it at anywhere you buy "as seen on TV stuff"

 

Uhhh... it looks like you stained the trim with the wax you used.

They sell automotive tape to tape off your trim before you apply waxes, sealers, coatings etc.

I always tape because that stuff is a b*tch to get out. I still can’t get sealer off my Popn’lock


First step is to remove the staining first. I would use a warm water 2:1 mixture with Simple Green and an old toothbrush.


I use Chemical Guys Tire and Trim dressing. Love it. I use it on my tires and black trim. It lasts about 3-4 months when you hand wash the truck only.

Always ask these questions in the detailing forum, otherwise you get a lot of ideas of what not to put on your car.

Use professional detailing products. They are less likely to damage your truck.

 

There is a company called Chemical Guys out there, they make a product specifically for removing dried wax from plastics, as well as a range of products for restoring plastics and dressings to keep them nice and black after that.

I've used silicone lubricant... spray some on a rag and wipe the black plastic trim, restores the darker look you're going for

Just paint it with bumper trim paint.
