I had an issue with my 08 tacoma running real rough. Changed out the battery because it tested no good. Now with the new battery it wont start. Lots of juice and it wants to start but wont. It started right off the bat but was rough. It stalled and now it sound like its firing it stutters and almost goes but then just cranks over. Help i dont have the money right now to take it to a shop. Ican do the work but looking to see if someone has had this issue or knows whats up.

Does it have a CEL? If its turning over and seems like it has compression but not starting I would think its a fuel or ignition issue. Do you have a security system on the truck that might be messing with it (once the little capacitor inside the key of my friends chevy went out and wouldnt start until replacing the key... don't know if toyota does anything similar) immobilizer issue? Done anything else besides the battery swap to the truck recently? Have you ran through and checked your fuses?

If you smell fuel you maybe losing fuel pressure, which would explain the sputtering / nonstart

I'm just saying what I would do in this situation just to start clearing some issues off the board... First I would disconnect the fuel line at the rail somewhere there should be a banjo bolt of some sort that connects the fuel line to the rail, then once its disconnected and the end wrapped in a towel or put into a gallon jug or something I'd turn the key and let the fuel pump prime and then check and see if fuel came out the open end. If fuel comes out at least you know you have fuel.

If no fuel comes out or its very little then you have a pump issue (dead or not coming on) or maybe clogged filter?

Second if you find you have fuel pressure now check for spark... pull out one of your plugs and connect the boot while having the end of the plug touching the metal of the block while turning over the truck and see if it arcs. This is basic stuff like I'd use to diagnose a dirt bike or something but I don't see why it wouldn't work on the truck.

Clean your throttle body. I would be willing to be alot of money thats what your problem is. Its been discussed many times on here.

It is not uncommon for late model vehicles to stall after the battery has gone dead or has been disconnected.

The engine computer has a basic idle speed control setting for when the engine is new. As you drive the car, deposits build up on the throttle body, which restricts the air flow and reduces the idle speed. The engine control computer compensates for this by opening the idle air bypass valve to achieve the correct idle speed. The computer stores this new bypass valve position in its memory. Over time, this can become a fairly substantial adjustment, but the change occurs so gradually, you will never notice it happening.

Unfortunately, when the battery is disconnected, some late model vehicles will lose this learned idle position, which will cause the vehicle to stall.

Clean the deposits built up on the throttle body (Throttle Body Service) using aerosol brake cleaner and a shop towel. This will allow the default idle air bypass valve value to function correctly. The idle learn procedure will begin again as it did when the vehicle was new. Some basic repair knowledge may be necessary to complete this procedure.
