Anyone want to weigh in here?

One week ago the seals on my front calipers went out, I lost my brakes and all he fun stuff. I took it to my local shop since it was -10 and I didn’t feel like laying out in the cold to replace the calipers and bleed the system. They replaced the calipers no problem. When I got it back the pedal was real soft. Ext day I went back to have the system rebled, they put it on the lift, bled it again and came back and said they didn’t get any air and the issue was prob the rear brakes needed replacing (I didn’t think this was accurate, I said thanks but no thanks and walked away) in the last week I put on about 100 miles (mostly highway and almost in one trip). Today, I was out of town and lost brakes again, looked at the wheel and a hardline was broken off the caliper. Since I’m out of town I brought it to a different shop and when they removed the wheel the caliper fell off. The original shop either failed to put the caliper bolts in or left them looser than heck and they worked their way out.

I called the original shop to see what they would do for me to make this right since them neglecting to do the job right the first time left me with a $250 repair bill that I don’t think is my responsibility, after a couple minutes of arguing over the phone the original shop offered me $100 refund. So I’d still be out $150. I also know the second repair was too expensive, but I didn’t really have the option of shopping it around.

Am I crazy for thinking the first shop should pay the entirety of the second repair bill? I was an hour and a half from home. No way I’m making the drive to let them fix it on their own; which is what he was telling me on the phone was his warranty policy.

Should I push them to give me a check for $250? Or cut my losses and take $100?

    Thanks

Mention liability to them and ask if they want to make everything go away the easy way, or the hard way.

Half assed work on something like brakes is inexcusable, I can see past other misses.

Sounds like a potentially fatal situation. Glad you and the public were unharmed. The truck too.

I’m not litigious by nature but I’d get a consult with a lawyer. Most will do a free one. You might be entitled to more $$, but then again, I’m not a lawyer and didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I wouldn’t agree to any settlement until.
    Mention gross negligence...
It’s outrageous your caliper fell off after the hard line snapped.
    Good Luck.

If my shop did that we would eat the cost of a refund and the bill for the other shop to do it. That's bullshit only giving you a partial refund.

Get refund for 100% or small claims court. PERIOD. I would accept nothing less and would go for max allowed by law if it goes to court. I'm not one you would ever find in a court room for bullshit reasons, but this is a life and safety issue. No excuses for that kind of work.

In my opinion it was a mistake that you didn't call the 1st shop, when you 1st noticed a problem. The conversation should have gone like this.

"Hello, this is ________. I just had my brakes fixed by your shop. I'm out of town and the hard line is snapped off. Do you want to pay for a tow bill back to your shop, or should I have it fixed at a shop here and you can pay them with your credit card over the phone? If you would like, I can text you pics."

I'd demand they refund the full $250 and if they argue simple say no problem, you'll take it up with the local DMV and DOT offices. That's the last thing they want.
