I just put Goodyear Duratracs on my 2014 DCTRDOR. Seemed like a good compromise tire. I did 265/75r16 and had to take the mud flaps off the front to get them to fit.

Hey yall let me know if I am wrong, but didn't a stock 1st Gen tacoma TRD complete the tough trail at moab when they introduced the TRD line? I think I remember reading that somewhere. The 2nd and 3rd gens are steps in the same direction to a point.

I hadn’t heard that, but it’s possible. 3/4s of wheelin is good driving skills, picking lines, and maybe a winch or two off camera... ;)

It is my firm belief that a stock toyota with a locker, good tires, and a good driver will get you to a point were another truck without lockers, no matter the amount of lift, cannot get to you to pull you out.

    I'll take that one further:

A stock truck with a good driver will get you to a point were another truck with a novice driver, no matter the amount of lift, lockers, etc... cannot get to you to pull you out.

A stock Tacoma with better tires is more than capable for the majority of trails.

Now if you want to crawl boulders and do some off trail technical stuff then the sky’s the limit.

Tacoma's are very capable off road trucks in stock form. toyota always made trucks with excellent wheel-base to them, the geometry of the truck paired with a good set of tires makes for an awesome rig. my old truck ('08 regular cab 4x4 manual) i took into places where jeep people are scared of. i took it in 2wd through trails they swore i would not make it through, barely ever needed the 4x4. lol most of "them" needed 4x4 due to "lack of skill". my current truck ('13 trd off-road) i also take into some hairy trails that i probably should not. so as long as you are not attempting some hard core rock climbing or deep mud pits then have no worries, lots of us 'wheel' our trucks in near-stock form, my only upgrade is a set of hankook 265-75's.
