I bought my 2012 taco and it didn't come with a keyless entry remote. I went to Autozone and purchased 3 different remote programmers and none worked. They hooked it up to a computer and P1604 startability malfunction code came up. Would this cause me not able to install the keyless entry remote?

That code should have nothing to do with the keyless entry. Just from a quick Google, it literally means the truck wouldn't start after 30 seconds of cranking. If you just bought the truck, who knows what happened. As long as the truck is running okay I wouldn't worry about it.

If by "remote programmer" you mean the remote that goes on your keychain, then the procedure for programming that to your truck should be in the owner's manual, unless that's changed since 2006.

Did you buy a used truck and the remote just wasn't included? Or are you trying to add this feature after the fact? If it was never there, then there are going to be other parts missing. As far as I know, if you have power locks then you should have keyless entry, but I may be wrong there.

My truck didn't come with the remote but has power locks so I just wanted to install them. I believe this truck was a repo so I only received a single key with no remote. It shouldn't be causing me issues to program it right? A local toyota dealership said they would do it for $250 but i would like to save some money if I can do it myself.

I was thinking it was in the owner's manual, but this is what I used. It seems like a lot of BS but if you do it all right it will work.

Programming the keys themselves with the antitheft chip in them is a whole different ballgame.
