I have an 06 Tacoma 4cyl Access Cab 5 spd manual. When I switch to 4wd the truck comes to a stop. Any help on diagnosis before I buy new transfer case.

I would take it to a professional shop for a diagnostic before you just up and replace the differential.

How did the drain plug look last time you changed the fluid? Was there a lot of metal?

How often do you use 4WD?

And yes ^^^^ Important to know if you mean 4H or 4L

From a stop, switch to 4H or 4L, I will go a couple of feet and then the truck stops

Start with the simple items by checking fluid levels in the transfer case and front differential. Remove the fill plugs and if no fluid comes out, add fluid until full and note the amount each took. If it's a significant amount, e.g. 1/2 quart or more, re-test the 4wd. If they were full or didn't take much fluid, we'll move up the troubleshooting chain according to your mechanical ability.

Mine did this a few weeks back and it was my front Differential....it had seized and had to be replaced. Quite rare from my understanding.

Although mine wouldn't even go a couple feet...truck just wouldn't move at all with 4WD engaged.

Do you know what the cause of the failure was?

Probably a slim chance, but are your front tires the same size as the rear and properly inflated?

I recall a few years ago seeing a Scout running around with larger tires on the rear than on the front. Maybe cool looking, but impractical.

This might be a dumb question, but when you switched it to 4H or 4L you were not trying to make any sharp turns on dry pavement were you?
