    Just 30 years? Got my 1st 4wd in 1973.

Need for equipment is relative to what/when/where/how a person wheels. I. Carry a full kit. It's all "used", so It's needed at some point.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Traction boards and/or a snatch strap a pretty quick to deploy and pack up, not to mention cheaper than a decent winch installed. However, I will concede that when a winch is needed nothing else will do.

I think it's funny when someone carries all the winch based recovery stuff (snatch block, tree saver, etc, etc) but they don't have a winch....really? That is the exact same thing has having no kids and hauling 5 car seats around with you.

99% of the time I go off road, there is no need for ANY OF the gear I carry. Probably never use all of it. But you never know which parts to the puzzle you will need. I'll just say this.... I've been off roaring for almost 45 years now, and at some point, I've used everything in my bag of tricks at least once. They don't help one bit if they're home, under the work bench.

Some consideration must be given to what degree of off roading a person does, as well as the people you normally wheel with. I got friends who do some crazy stuff. Over the years my ratio of getting stuck vs pulling others out is about 1 in 10. I carry gear so people who don't can still make it home at night as much as any other reason

Like someone else said above... It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it! Thanks!

Man I would hate to winch with hi-lift. My 3 most important "recovery" purchases were the winch, rear locker, and ez deflator. I'm not saying it's a tank, but at 15 psi with rear locked and being a single cab 4 cylinder...not a lot it can't do.

Also just FYI, there is a tool bag at tractor supply that makes a perfect recovery bag. It's a brown and black tool bag with heavy duty zippers, and pouches on the outside. I have tree saver, snatch block, extension strap, 4 shackles, snatch strap, gloves, and deflator all in it, and it fits behind the seats.KIMG0292.jpg

Viar 88p compressor (blows a fuse every so often, always carry spares because it will happen eventually and it sucks when you don't have one on hand)

    Recovery strap

Tool kit with all the basics (wrenches, sockets, screwdriver, hammer, gloves, towels, clamps, etc.)

    Hi-Lift

    Fire extinguisher

    Knives

    Shovel

Flashlights (including a Viper flashlight with a taser built in, because you never know)

    Basic first aid kit

    Shackle hitch receiver

Lighters (never understood why people get those fire starter kits when a cigarette lighter is so much easier)

    Ratchet straps and bungee cords

Zip ties (always come in handy)

    Duct tape

Couple quarts of motor oil and a couple quarts of gear oil.

...probably a few other odds and ends I'm forgetting. I also make sure to bring a gym bag with extra clothes in it just in case something happens and I'm stuck somewhere overnight. Also always bring plenty of water and food.

Only thing on this list that I've never needed to use on the trail is the fire extinguisher, and the taser lol. Everything else has been used at least once in the last year, whether I needed it someone else on the trail needed it. I usually hit the trails at least 2 times a month if not more, typically with at least one other person, sometimes alone.

A couple items I haven't seen mentioned that I carry:

Valve stems (in case I loose/break one when deflating with the ARB tool)

    Fuses

Gun (not stored, bring each time)

    Spare belt and hose

    Li-ion jump starter

Good things to add, I bring extra fuses with me as well ever since my air compressor blew it's fuse once and I had to drive several miles into town down a windy road with 12 psi in my tires, lol. Wasn't fun.

I have one of those jump starters too but I've found that mine doesn't work well with the power needs of our trucks...mine was a gift from a family member and only works on "regular" cars, I keep it anyway in case I run into someone in the city that needs a jump. Got a set of heavy duty jumper cables for my truck though.
