    I have a 2004. Should I get something smaller? Like a 40mm?

I just ordered the parts for mine, I got all 3 pieces on ebay for under $40. Now to get the bolt, nuts, and washer at the local hardware store. Thanks for the write up op.

Regrettably, neither do I. When I was first experimenting with mine for the 2nd gen I pulled the factory bolt which was 25mm long and figured that doubling the length would work. It did but reading through the thread the general census is that adding another 5mm to length is a little better.

With that said, I’d try using the same formula to put yours together. Once you do please drop a line back here to let us know about your success.

    I bought 55mm and 60mm used the 60's. I didn't like way the 55 grabbed.

iPhone SE, same size as the 5/5S, 2 hands into the Ram Mount cradle, 1 hand and a little coordination out of the cradle.

ONE HANDED AKRON PHONE HOLDER VERSION

Didn’t read all the replies and I’m not posting all part numbers but I’m currently working on my own set up with one major difference from OP’s:

60mm long M6 bolt with Allen key head
M6 lockring washers and hex nuts as needed
1 inch ram ball that OP listed
Dual 1 inch ball adaptor arm, also posted by OP

    Here’s where things go differently:

In the open end of the arm a 1 inch (aka 25mm) to 17mm ball adapter will go in
My current Akron brand one hand operation spring loaded phone holder will attach to the 17mm ball

This setup is necessary for fast ingress/egress for my purposes.

Hopefully it goes well and thanks OP!

I’ll be sure to include some pics of the install and product numbers if I settle on this setup.

Fuck suction cups lol mine keeps falling off!

Edit: added header for tldr and clarification because I noticed immediately previous posts were about one-handed operation

I really enjoy seeing what our community has done with this thread and find it awesome to see different twists on the original plan.

Yeah for sure so do I, I’ve read your post and a few choice responses dozens of times now and I’m excited to finally have ordered some parts for it.

I especially like the bolt on aspect of this mount version plus you curated the topic nicely for posterity, I owe you and the TW community pics for sure, please bother me for them if I forget!

Thanks to the OP for a great idea!
I didn't like the ram cradle, so I started with the Scosche magnet (which is great and holds the phone in all conditions), and a USB outlet below the mount.
Now I'm trying out a magnetic QI charger so I don't have to plug it in, because: a) i'm lazy AF, and b) it's super cool. It needed a smaller ball, which I found (see below).
It charges great, but I need to experiment with getting the magnets closer because of my thick phone case. Still a work in progress. I'm going to try recessing the magnets in the case.
Here's what I have so far, in case anyone else wants to try it:

I'm glad someone tried this, I will give it a shot and if it blocks my view, i will put it somewhere else. I went with the pillar pods so the bottom won't work

Ok this is dope, glad you also picked up on the 25mm to 17mm ball mount adapter, it definitely expands your options.

Now I have always been extremely wary of magnetic mounts but you say it holds well huh? That is quite intriguing as a magnetic mount is even lazier than a one hand operated spring loaded mount, which is clutch.

Expand that magnet mount to all in one drop-and-begin-charging, you may as well have a beverage with a tiny umbrella in it while reclining on an equatorial coastline!

I am an iPhone user currently by interface preference, not opposed to android but I definitely need my phone wrapped in a life proof case or equivalent for my own lifestyle/clumsiness as well. Is your setup possibly compatible with iPhone and/or waterproof case?

    Edit: replying to @LC7

Yeah I had my eye on the upper one as well, lower won’t work with your pillar pods there for sure, will be a dope cyberpunk setup when you get yours in, hardwire that ish too! That’s next level for my current skills but a definite future mod.

Always classier to hardwire up something more universal like an ac or usb3.0 outlet than a particular phone/gps charger for sure.

    Edit: spelling

I can't answer about the iPhone, but there are many answered questions about iPhone compatibility in the Amazon link I provided. Just scroll down to the bottom.
As far as magnetic mounts go, the scosche mount is a magnet, and came with a thin metal plate to put on your phone. I couldn't knock my phone off that one while driving (and I tried). The QI charger uses a magnet attached to the back of your phone, in a 4-square pattern outside of the charging zone. I'm not satisfied with the security of the QI magnet yet, but I'm not giving up.
Also, the QI charger I purchased has a retractable USB cord that tucks away when unplugged, it changes LED color when the phone is charging, and is very inexpensive.
