Seen it, and watched it get put together. Very cool, stable, fast, not to heavy.

Okay, the Hobie finally went up on the Taco and Prinsu rack this weekend. I went to Half Moon Bay two days in a row to catch some Dungies. The Taco handled well through the twisties even with the Hobie up top. I snugged the Yak down with only 3 ratchet straps. Everything seemed very secure and the truck felt confident even up to 80mph. That said, I think I better do some more homework on the amount of wind uplift that is place on the kayak at such speeds.

@Blackout14 I missed your comment about the retractable ratcheting tie downs. Yes, dealing with all the extra webbing is just one more thing to manage when you're time can be better spent on the water. I also like the idea of having them permanently mounted on the Prinsu. I've ordered a coupled sets of these. Which should make life simpler.

I'm planning to turn the rear crossbar 90 degrees. It seems to deflect more than I'm comfortable with, while I'm sliding the PA 14 up top.

This setup seems to work great if you're in a situation like myself where you just don't have the storage space for a trailer. If you're launching from crowed tourist destinations as I will be almost anywhere on the California coast, a trailer is just a pain to park. I have no regrets with the Prinsu or the Hobie PA.

I've mentioned it before, but I highly recommend nrs straps over ratchet straps.
They are very heavy duty and don't rip or fray images.jpg images (1).jpg

I'm looking at ordering the OEM stow away roof rack for my 17 double cab. I love how it looks and it seems functional. My kayak is a 17 foot wooden hull that I built, it weighs around 45 pounds which is under the capacity of the OEM rack, but I'm afraid that the wind pressure would be too much for the rack with such a big boat. I used to use thule cross beams on my old subaru that held up fine. Anyone have any thoughts on running this set up, longest trips would be around 4-5 hrs @60-65 mph.

I'm not trying to sway you to a different tie down method, but just so everyone else understands---if you can't get the cam buckled straps tight enough, you are doing something wrong or the straps are crap. Here are a couple of tutorials. Very simple, easy, and secure.

And in my opinion, everyone should learn how to do it with good ol' rope. You can get this VERY secure.

This I with my hero. I also can fit my zen on it with no problem but a 10 ft boat hangs off a lot.

A good line from the bow down to your front bumper is going to help ensure the rack doesn't get worked to hard. Maybe do some test trips before you hit the interstate.

I am really looking forward to getting out paddling as well once the ice is gone.
Not sure about your childhood but I remember my Dad strapping the canoe to the top of the family car and tying it down on the most basic racks going,
no Thule or Yakima in the 70s.
